Can anyone tell me what the IA means at the end of so many place names, ie patagonIA, mongolIA, AustralIA? And what is its origin?

Interesting question, unfortunately I have no answer, but I did attempt to look for 15 minutes after seeing this. Now you have my curiosity piqued and I'm sure one of our erudite members will come along with an answer - they always do!

I am not sure if this answers your question totally, but it seems to be a Latin suffix meaning "...state of, condition of, quality of; act of".
Look here for more info.

That would make sense for the word "Patagonia".

Taken from Wikipedia: "The name Patagonia comes from the word patagon used by Magellan to describe the native people who his expedition thought to be giants."
