Apparently the British press has already been sticking it to the Australians (like our 11 gold doesn't count?), and claiming they are going to do all sorts of things to the Aussies in 2012!

Funny how the poms like to get stuck into us. I like giving it back to them too but I sometimes get the impression that we do it in good nature, the English really do like sticking it to us. I recall when England won the Rugby World Cup they Englishmen were somewhat put out that when they came to "stick it to me" all I could do was congratulate them, the best side had won. Likewise good on the Poms for cleaning up at velodrome at this rate they really should flog us in 2012, but as long as the better side wins and its all fair and above board so be it. As long as we beat those Yanks!

Congratulations to the Aussies as well. It is just that I do feel very happy that the Brits have done so well up to now.

Sherry is correct. We British are in uncharted territory in what is being called "the Great Haul of China". Only a few games ago, we went home with one gold only (Atlanta, I think it was in 96). It just great to see us competing and winning with a bit more consistency. And we all know how good the Aussies are in virtually all aspects of sport so trying to have a sly dig is a non starter.
Mind you, it is nice to be above Germany for once.

It's funny to see the US and China competing for the most gold medals and then seeing other countries being so happy over winning a few medals, no matter what kind they are. I'm not criticizing anyone, I just find these differences quite interesting.
Argentina got its first gold medal in these Olympic Games yesterday (in cycling) and people (me included) were so happy! Argentina has won a gold medal and a bronze medal so far and the soccer team has already made it to the final match. Considering the little support Argentine athletes are given by the government over here, I think this country does really, really well in the Olympic Games.

Okay, I have to get on my soap box and gripe. I was just sitting here, started to watch synchronized swimming, and have decided to change the channel. Maybe I'm a prude, but I simply do not understand why some of the costumes the athletes wear need to be so skimpy. And it is in many of the sports, not just swimming. I was embarrassed to watch the Phelps boy because his attire was worn so very, very, low. Now the two girls I just watched (and caused me to change the channel) have pink suits that are cut so high up the hip that their tan lines from their bikinis show! Of course, that is another story... Some of these outfits are disgusting! Guess I must just be old fashioned. Do you suppose that is why I enjoy the winter olympics more? edited: Wow - after looking at my post, it comes off as a little over the top! Apologies. However, I still say some of the outfits are a bit extreme. If Phelps wore his swim suit much lower, his umm, you know, that thing, could be his rudder!

I actually thought the triathletes (the winning three anyway) looked great - inspite of their extreme fitness, they still remained feminine, which makes a change from the old butch eastern European athletes of the old regimes. Had'nt noticed Phelps's swimsuit, but surely anything is better (well if you are easily offended) than skimpy Speedos. Surely nobody has forgotten Linford Christie and his running kit? Have avoided looking at the synchronised swimming as personally find it uber tacky. Was surprised to hear commentator say that beach volleyball is the second most played sport in the world after soccer. Well done team UK on another sailing gold - really close finish in decent sea conditions for a change - i.e. rough!

Re Womens Volletball outfits. I dont like them at all and I'm a guy, same thing goes for the Australian womens basketball outfits. If I want to ogle at women there are plenty of opportunities outside of sport where I prefer to admire skill and athletism.

Irish showjumper Denis Lynch has pulled out of the equestrian individual final at the Olympics after his horse tested positive for a banned substance. Lynch was due to compete in the final today on board Lantinus, but has now been suspended along with competitors from Germany, Brazil and Norway. All four horses have reportedly tested positive for the prohibited substance capsaicin.
What a shame for young fans of these top showjumpers. Nevertheless it was an excellent final round with a jump off between Canada and Sweden - Canada winning, with Beezie Madden from US coming third. Great contest.

So, what's the deal with He Kexin's age? I looked around (briefly) and didn't see another post...Do you think she's really that young? They're talking about taking back The Gold! How awful for the kid!

Here is an article about her age. It would indeed be awful if they'd take her medals from her, especially since it's not her fault that she's at the Olympics. It's the Chinese Olympic Committee that should be blamed for sending her.

Lol, the Chinese seemed to think they could get away with a faked opening ceremony, so why not with an underage gymnast? And yes, the rules have been changed, it's in that article too: Quote:
The minimum age for female gymnasts was increased from 14 to 15 in 1981, and up to 16 in 1997, to protect the physical and mental health of young athletes.

Lol, Leau, I watched some taekwondo too, so you aren't the only one I was watching the men's beach volleyball final match and then during intermission they cut to taekwondo. By the way, congrats to The Netherlands for making it to the final match in women's field hockey I was sad to see the Argentine girls so sad, but the Dutch girls played very well.
