Bit early for my olympic moment but i'm going with the German weightlifter claiming gold with world record on final lift of night and carrying photo of his deceased wife onto the podium.

I agree that was an incredibly poignant moment, quogequox - I was amazed at his ability to even focus enough to compete after such a tragedy. That's a true champion.

Well done young Tom Daley for coming 7th in the world in the 10m. diving - an amazing feat for a 14 year old. He will surely be a medal hope in 2012 on home turf (well home pool) - if we get it built on time.

Apparently the British press has already been sticking it to the Australians (like our 11 gold doesn't count?), and claiming they are going to do all sorts of things to the Aussies in 2012!
I honestly have not seen anything in the press other than friendly banter and nothing like the angst which surfaces in rugby and cricket matches.
Apparently, someone from the British media wanted to use one of the Australian bicycles for a photo shoot. The Australian team agreed, until they found out that they wanted to photograph the bicycle with trainer wheels on!

Population of England (which includes Scotland, Wales AND Northern Ireland)- 60,000,000 Population of Australia (including Tasmania!), 20,000,000. China has over 50 times our population and USA is 15 times bigger... Medals adjusted per capita- GB- 19 Australia- 42. Boom-boom!

And yet again we aren't squirming at all. Good luck to you. Most people happy to see the Brits win after being a little underachieving over the last few years. It's nice when a team goes through the hard times to win. I love teasing the English in sports but I got a feeling that the london olympics will be one of the best ever, just a sense I have, I hope so anyway as I plan to be there for it

Nothing wrong with darts - not quite so inane as synchronised swimming with the cheesey grins.

Gurning is the only one of those that I would have a chance of winning. (Now where DID I put that horse-collar?)

Oh my goodness, I completely forgot Dwile Flonking . Now there's a thought. It is usually played in pubs, so no problem with the provision of venues there... What is it?

He he And may the games begin NOW Love the per capita stuff...Aussie sport invests HUGE amounts of money into their sports compared to GB. Huge amounts spent on Swimming.....oops the Aussie men were awesome were they not? The women won six gold medals but hey lets compare; Rebecca Adlington won two gold medals on a £12,000 budget! That is £6,000 per medal!!! Get yer calculator out Mr. Ozzz I bet you can't find an Aussie female swimmer having to train, eat, live and travel on that budget!!! Go on....make my day Granted our Cyclists had a lot of money £22.5 million pumped in...but in comparison to China, USA, France, Germany and AUSTRALIA it was peanuts...yet SEVEN golds...per capita you win....per £/$ there is no comparison. C'mon Ozzz let me have it We should do well in the water sports to be honest we are an Island which as a country of that population it is somewhat dwarfed by the land mass of one said Island of.....Australia!!!! * Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves......

What about the recent British Shin Kicking Competition? We could have that as an event. Shin Kicking

Doomed you seem to take more pleasure in the failure of Australia than the achievements of your own athletes. A bitter point of view I would have thought and one unlikely to draw response. Just enjoy worthy victories regardless of where the medals go we Aussies do.

Even I, a hopeless sports fan, shake my head at the amount of money that goes into sport in this country and now Kevvie has just pledged more so we can win more medals in London. What possible return is ther for the millions that get given?

I can honestly say I would not have minded at all if Australia had got more gold medals than Britain. But I really was thrilled we got so many.

I think that anything which will encourage our couch potato younger generation into sport cannot be a bad thing.
Hate all this jingoism - surely we are both members of Her Majesty's Commonwealth.

I don't know if some of the comments on here are said in jest, but I find them disheartening and in somewhat poor taste. I am thrilled when someone, regardless of where they are from, rises to the top and wins a medal. They have worked long and hard for this. The U.S. may have walked away with the majority of wins, but I found myself cheering for the Aussies, Argentinians, and every other country - even when they were up against an American. Ah well, just my opinion and we all know what those are. I guess that's why there are coaches who think screaming at and belittling their players makes them great coaches...

I agree, Sandy. ALL of the athletes have trained their hearts out, whether they had a large budget or not, and no matter what country they represent. You can't get to the Olympics purely by paying your way. But no matter who wins or loses, it's the display of good sportsmanship that's medal-worthy in my book.
