Toe separators - before these handy little foam inventions, I was stuck with nail varnish on the sides of my toes, or cotton wool on the nail varnish. A horrible conundrum.

These are neither pretty nor comfortable, but they are pure genius.

I so agree. What I wonder is, they never seem to wear out, I had mine about 20 years. How do the makers make money out of this?

ren,
I always lose ONE toe separator. So, I go to the chemist, buy a new set, return home, only to find the missing one under the sofa. I must have 20 toe separators .

I think the manufacturers count on people like me to lose one of the two.

They aren't just made in white any longer; I have a pair in pink.

How come if you keep the socks that have a missing mate you never find two alike to make up a pair....

I have a theory about missing socks. I think they die and are reincarnated as hangers. Don't we all have a zillion hangers in our closets that we have no idea where they came from?

The question that perplexes me about socks is:

Why is it that, when I have ten pairs of socks with holes in them and only two pairs without holes, the sock that I lose is one of those with no holes?

Back to the original question....

I would pick:

1. the microwave oven - without it, I might never find the time for a hot meal

2. the computer/internet - without THOSE I wouldn't know all the wonderful people on this site

3. Sony Walkman (& all the other portable music devices) - I shall have music wherever I go!

Being in a grumpy mood this morning after 20 minutes on a worthless phonecall, I would like there to be:-
1. A device to totally disable automated response telephone systems.
(And as I am still in moan mode)
2. A device that would give an electric shock to BMW drivers when they drive with no consideration to other road users.
3. A device that would temporarily give people who park illegally in handicapped bays the symptoms of those people who have to.

4... and a device to immobilize mobile phones that people are shouting into on a train or bus so everyone can hear and that ring in theatres and cinemas even when there has been a warning... in fact ALL mobile phones would be good. ( apparently there is an invention that can do this (and the phone never works again) but it is illegal to use it.)
Tragic.

5... and a device to block a friend who apparently has me on 'automatic forward' cause I get ten to twenty emails forwarded from her each day - but would not let her know they are blocked cause I cannot hurt her feelings (she is my daughter-in-law's mother). Maybe there is such a device and I just don't know about it????

(Sorry about your bad start today SOTHC. Maybe you need to go back to bed and start over!)

Paper is one of the greatest inventions. Without it we wouldn't have proper means of communication. We would also not have books to read. I cannot imagine a life without books.

Two that have been mentioned again and again but mean the most to me...

The phone. When I think of all my conversations with my aunt and uncle and my grandma before she died, I cannot imagine not having those.

The washing machine. I HATE doing laundry but if I had to wash by hand, well, it would be 10 times worse.

My third is windshield wipers and headlights. (Okay, four!) Without them, we'd would not be able to drive in storms or at night otherwise!

And one that does not fit this category but I wish I had...heated car seats. I rode in my friend's car with them and they would be heaven in winter!

I'd go more for the basics:

1: electrical distribution grid
3: transistor/integrated circuit - lead to today's electronic devices
3: automobile

Happy Inventive Trivia!

The three best inventions that have made my life better (foregoing the obvious, electricity, phones, car, etc.)...

1. Anti-depressants
2. Alarm clocks that slowly wake you up (as opposed to a sudden loud beeping, that gives you a heart attack every morning.)
3. Board games (they're pretty much the only thing my son and I both like, we play for hours).
