Mayor Frank Ney was a long-time mayor of our city. I've lived here almost thirty years and have only known two others. When he passed away, this statue was cast in his honour. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Nanaimo and loved the city dearly. He often dressed up as a pirate, as an ambassador, he loved the role. Nanaimo was once world famous for the bathtub races, people came from all over the world to race. Naturally, the pirate suit came in handy then . When the route for the race changed from the island to the mainland to a course just around the island the races' popularity declined. Some people would argue that fact. "Black Frank" was a real character all right, and as a leader, an inspiraton.

Here's another view of Berlin from the TV tower, looking roughly west. The street running diagonally left to right is Unter Den Linden which leads to the Brandenburg Gate (just about visible).

Autumn leaves

Pursuing one of my interests today, I was next in line to this English Civil War musketeer, and managed to sneak a quick shot (photo that is) just as he fired.

Here's one of our best art deco underground stations, most are on the Piccadilly Line like this one is in Chiswick.

First foggy autumn-like morning yesterday and lots of these cobwebs between the railings.

This is Nora Head Lighthouse. It is about halfway between Sydney and Newcastle, in New South Wales. If you look closely, you may be able to see a ship in the background- it is most likely an ore carrier headed to the refinery at Newcastle. At any given time, you can see dozens of them anchored off Newcastle.

Last weekend, we took a trip down south to visit a number of friends. On the way home we stopped at Donnybrook, a town famous for its apples. These are the bathrooms outside the greengrocer's - appropriately labelled Jonathons (for the men) and Pink Ladies (for the women). Jonathons and Pink Ladies are varieties of apple.

HMCS Sackville, a Flower Class corvette of WWII vintage, at anchor in Halifax, NS, and serving as Canada's Naval War Memorial. I'd always known that these ships were small, but never really appreciated just what that meant until I toured Sackville last week.

Freddie Mercury said these mountains were Made in Heaven, Where he lived in Montreux he woke to the mountains everyday. All be it he lived a little closer then where i took the picture from. The Mountains were featured on the Last Queen CD Made in Heaven.

I've always liked skyscrapers, and believe me till the last few years or so we had very few in London besides some hideous flats (many of which have been demolished) and here's one of the sort I do like in Chiswick. Ours still don't come in bunches like they do in the States but like modern sculptures scattered at random.
