I get 95% of books from the library and on the odd occasion that I want one for my collection I'll buy it new from Dymocks Bookstores or second-hand if they have it.

My younger siblings usually bring home a book or two, which I nick and finish in a couple hours. Other than that, I love hanging around Chapters, which has an adjoining Starbucks. I go get a hot chocolate, and just browse. I buy every classic I see, just to familiarize myself with the stories. I never really go to the library much...

I have a wonderful Red Cross second-hand bookshop near me, and for my favourite authors when they bring new books out - Ottakar's.

My library cards--that's right, cards--expired long ago and I haven't since renewed them. That includes cards to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Gaston-Lincoln Regional, and Wake County public library systems, along with my community borrower's card from UNC-Charlotte.
As a rule, I buy my books from various sources. Amazon.com and eBay are great to buy from, as are Borders, Books-A-Million and Barnes & Noble. Unfortunately, there aren't that many used bookstores in Charlotte, save for one located in the Plaza-Midwood section of town. Other than that, the best bet for secondhand books are the Goodwill stores.

Oh for a local bookstore, secondhand or new!!! A local English bookstore, that is!
Sadly I find myself in the position of not having easy access to books except via internet. I buy most from Amazon.
When I lived in Ireland I spent lots of time in a variety of bookstores choosing which books I wanted to buy and read, though as a child I was a library addict.

I buy second -hand books from a store called "Sefer and Sefel" in downtown Jerusalem. I've been buying there since the store opened close to 30 years ago! The shop is on the second storey in a little alley. Actually, the alley is quite well-known, as the most famous nut and sunflower seed store in Jerusalem is located there.

Oh libraries, how I miss them... I live in Israel, a part of Israel that has a library that if it burned down tonight it wouldn't even phase me. Probably one of the biggest things to draw me back to living in the United States is the library system and affordable used books not to mention the beautiful B&N's.
So what do I do? I have a "wish list" on Alibris.com and when a friend comes over for a visit or I go back to the States I order 30-50 books and bring them back in luggage. Periodically I will order a bunch and have them sent in a 'M'Bag which is affordable. I do buy the occasional book here in Israel but they are well over priced and used books, at least the things I seem to look for are hard to find. When I'm on the road guiding I sometimes find a couple of books in a hotel that I'll latch on too but that's pretty infrequent. When I travel abroad I'm always on the look out for books in Cairo or Bombay. My friends just shake their heads as my bags just get heavier and heavier.

That is too funny! I know exactly where Sefer v' sefel is and I've bought quite a few books from them. The thing is they're gangsters in their pricing. Supply and Demand I know, but it kills me to pay 40 shekels or more for a book that will last for only a moment.

I usually buy my books on line from amazon.com, through the mail I go for Hamilton Book Sellers they do have some real bargains and locally every once in a while I go to the bookstores. Hippo books and Half.com are good used books alternatives. Talk about being overrun by books, I moving to a new place so that I can set one room exclusively for my library.

If you become a member at Borders bookstore (no charge) you will receive discount coupons via email nearly every week. I make good use of those.
Plus I also go through the book aisle at Costco (a warehouse membership store)as they have the best prices. Not always the largest selection but a good discount if you find something you want to read.

I read all the time and feel bad if there is not at least ONE book to read.
At the moment my favorite is Bernard Cornwell (I love history and he writes it beautifully)
Most of what I read comes from the library. But I do own too many books according to my husband.
I buy them second hand at the charity shops and sometimes on eBay. Especially audio books are great on eBay.
And I love being read to, so books on CDs are great!

Lately I have ventured into buying books online, I never dared before. I received a wonderful birthday present this year of the whole of Richard and Judy's choices for 2008 and they arrived from Amazon. That got me a bit hooked and lately I have found a terrific and extremely speedy and efficient book site that charges nothing for postage( I will part with the name if you PM me). As books here are very pricey I am thrilled.

Ren just mentioned the best way to get books. As a gift! I've indeed gotten many that way, or via giftcards to the big book stores. Something a reader will always appreciate.

I am blessed to be living in a city and a neighborhood that is extremely book-friendly. There are booksellers on the streets in my neighborhood, selling everything from Marx to John Grisham for extremely low prices. There are several used book stores in walking distance (or used to be before I hurt my back). The Strand has a lot of used and overstock books, but also a great selection of reviewers' copies for half price. Another is a charity shop where your purchases benefit a housing charity. Sometimes it's too much of a good thing, though. When I first got here, I had a hard time not buying everything I saw. Especially since they were so expensive and hard to get in the part of Canada I'm from. It took me a while to find the library (which was right around the corner ), but I use it a lot now too. My apartment is too small for all the books . In spite of this, I do occasionally order from Amazon. What can y'do - it's convenient. Y

I have a lot of books, all read at least once. I'm getting yet another, bookshelf, to be sure they all have a home. I also am a bit selfish with my books...If I lend a book, the reader must follow proper 'book etiquette.' Even if it is a paperback, (mine appear untouched) I want it back. I would NEVER dog ear, or any other thing to spoil a book! I guess my OCD is at it's worst on the Book front! Happy Reading! I guess I forgot the question...I use the Library, but if I want to keep the story in the family, I actually BUY it-as long as there are at least 300 pages. I have a bookstore called (eew!) Dog Eared Books, that I can bring in a box, and leave with unread box, for free!

I almost always buy my books on Amazon. You can get some pretty great deals on that site and then it is nice to be referred to other books which I might not have considered otherwise. It's dangerous, though. You start browsing and filling up that shopping cart, you can be spending a whole lot more than you originally intended!

Schoonie101, I find this is true of any book store I find myself in - virtual or otherwise . I find it useful to go in with only so much money and that's it. Hard to do that online, though.
... Ah, temptation.
