I am noticing more frequently that when I am typing in text, such as here for instance, there is getting to be a delay of up to a word, between typing it in and it appearing on the screen. Any idea what causes this? It isn't all the time but it is happening more often.

Is this XP or Vista?

I'd think this problem might happen if the computer is struggling a bit. Perhaps too many background programs are using the computer's resources. How much memory has the computer got? Go to 'Start > Run' and type msconfig into the box. Count how many items are listed there and how many are ticked. Only the ticked ones are actually running. For instance, I have 15 items listed but only 7 of them are ticked. That is individual to my computer though. Yours will differ.

If you have a defrag program running all the time, or a screensaver that is ready to run, try turning them off.

Have a look in the Task Manager to see if anything is hogging the CPU. The CPU column should mostly display all '00' when the computer is idle (apart from System Idle Process that should read around '99').

Also, keep up with the computer house-keeping. Delete the temp files and clear the browser cache once in a while. Then defrag the system. Small things like that can sometimes help.

Edit: Another thought. Do a virus and spyware scan with whatever security programs you use, just as a precaution.

This is XP. I have just spent a couple of hours going through startup and disabling anything not necessary. I just typed in every startup file into the Google engine and there is a good explanation for virtually every entry so that you can make decisions which will not affect anything. I had 27 processes running which I have managed to reduce to 14 and I have deleted histories, temp files etc, so now I will give everything a good testing to see if I have improvement. Actually just typing this in, I can see there is one. Many thanks.

That was just the right thing to do BB. One additional thought about programs that want to start with Windows. Some have 'Start with Windows' tick boxes within their own Options so that it may not be necessary to stop them in msconfig. Untick the option in the program instead. Perhaps that wouldn't be a better or worse way of preventing background programs running unnecessarily but it's just handy to be aware of this. I'd probably use the program's option if it has it.

Yes, and I also found that many programs have built in updaters running continuously. I have unticked quite a few permissions but do have to remember to update manually from time to time.

Thinking further, a factor that could affect the time it takes for typing to appear on the screen is the speed of the fingers. If you type so fast that it sounds as if you're playing the 'Flight of the Bumble Bee' on the keyboard, then I suppose there could be some delay. Hopefully, there'd be less with the measures you've taken.

I'm never likely to suffer from that problem. If the keyboard could flash a message up that says "Come on then!", I'm sure it would.

I am a very fast typist (years of practice) so maybe that didn't help. But I still have a distinct improvement, just about 90 percent better. I have got the key speed set at the top setting.

Try putting lead weights on your fingers
