Although I can probably 'phone a friend' on this one I think it's the sort of thing everyone needs to know in case it happens, as it's never happened to me before but now I know it's possible.

I've got Windows XP Home and only my own user account. Yesterday another one popped up on my bootup screen and needed a password to access. It's called rdpuser if that means anything.

I did pick up something nasty last week when I clicked a link from Wikipedia and it jammed IE7. Since then it's both been jamming regularly and also the computer restarted on its own yesterday. I ran a virus scan which was clear and have also been getting the computer running slowly when the EzDub DVD burner is acting up even when it's not in use.
It looks like both a virus and a trojan but do I need to take it in to be looked at or is there anything else I can do myself?

I am doing a system restore for the various hiccups but not for the new account user.

David,
The 'rdp' is what matters. That stands for Remote Desktop Protocol. I am giving you a page from my security system that will give you a bit more info on this and you can search for or link to help on getting it resolved. Toward the bottom of the page you will see a Response statement telling where to go. It is a pretty serious threat.

RDP info

Edited to add:
I believe I remember you recently posting somewhere about an account being broken into with your banking also? That could quite easily be directly linked to this problem because all your personal info can be gathered and used.

Thanks Sandy, the good news is the system restore has everything behaving and looking familiar again. The latest bug was only a few days ago but the bank details couldn't have come from here as it needed my pin number as well. Luckily the bank have now replaced the money which was quite a lot.

If all still seems dodgy I may need to show it to my engineer in case whatever it is is still hanging around in the background. I've also heard you can give one your own details so they can do a scan from their own internet connection like some of the helpline ones do. At least it's stopped jamming every time I open a program.
