Nice Q:) I would first save my signed first edition Irving Stone book, The Greek Treasure, which I haven't read yet but I'm sure I'll like because he is a brilliant author.
However, along with my cats, money, and my favorite jeans, I would save my Barnes and Noble gift cards so I could but some more books!

"The Warlock of Firetop Mountain" by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone.

OK, for all people who didn't grow up in the 80s this was the first book in the Fighting Fantasy gamebook series - a kind of Choose Your Own Adventure thing.

At least in this book you can become King of the Mountain forever - literally!

My autographed copy of The Stephen King Story by George Beahm. He is a sweetheart and I have an auotgraphed letter plus more autographed books by him. He writes about Stephen King and others. I will never probably live long enough to get an autograph from Sk but I can dream.

having actually suffered the upset of a house fire I didn't think for one moment about books and stuff,
what mattered was that the kids were out it was afterwards that you think of the things that are lost and gone forever.

i know think that I will keep a backup cd of all the special photos and stuff that mean so much for me.

and perhaps keep it by my bed but hopefully lightning wont strike twice and it wont happen to me a second time.

books and stuff can be replaced its the memorys that hurt.

I'm sorry you had to go through that Rachel
My parents have a "box" thing, they keep all the important papers and suchlike in it, a bit like a safe, it locks etc, but is small and is specifically designed (according to the makers blurb when they bought it) to be fireproof, and flood proof, and basically "survive" any disaster that might befall a home.

I'd save "Streets Of Gold" by Evan Hunter.

Hunter (a.k.a Ed McBain) was way up there in any list of 'top American writers of the 20th Century', in my opinion

I first read "Streets Of Gold" when I was in my teens, reread it, then loaned it to someone, who lost it
I fretted for years and years until I finally tracked down a replacement from Amazon - lovingly stamped 'Beverly Hills Public Library'.

I suppose many of the books that I love could be replaced. Hmm, I guess it would have to be my copy of "The 30th Anniversary Reader's Digest Reader."

I know it sounds boring from the title, but it's a delightful book. I can't help but feel this small book is actually a library! There are articles that warm your heart, and there are articles that break your heart. Most of all, it's one of those rare books that make you feel you are a better person for having read it.

Definitely all six books in The Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett. Each book is about 600-700 pages, but one story flows into the other and covers a 10-year span, so they had to be condensed into six books:

The Game of Kings

Queen's Play

The Disorderly Knights

Pawn In Frankincense

The Ringed Castle

Checkmate

Having already scanned all of my reading material into PDF files, I would save my external hard drives first before grabbing any dead tree books. But my paper copies of Little Women and The Hunt For Red October would definitely get saved only because they're both autographed first editions. I plan for them to put my 9 year old nephew through college and/or pay for my admission to the Old Writer's Home a few years down the road.
