Most weeknights I switch over to the Jay Leno show and watch the opening monologue, maybe the next segment (especially headlines) and might watch more if a upcoming guest interests me.

All that time I've never seen John Melendez do anything but raise his cup when Leno introduces him at the end of the monologue. (I want that job! ) So tell me, what am I missing? What does John Melendez actually do??

Actually he's the announcer and also does the occasional skit and provides a bit of banter (like Kevin does).
I like his skits where he challenges people to some odd contest like running a sprint in high heels or riding tricycles.
