Bedford Basin, the inner harbour of Halifax, Nova Scotia, taken from the train as I was leaving the area a couple of weeks ago. It's a peaceful scene now, but during both World Wars was full of ships forming into convoys to cross the Atlantic. The bridges in the distance span The Narrows, leading to the outer Halifax Habour and mark the spot where the ships
Mont Blanc (a munitions ship) and
Imo collided in December 1917, resulting in the largest man-made explosion prior to the atomic bomb and devastation of a large part of Halifax.
On a happier note, my hotel was across the road from Bedford Basin, so I had a grand view each morning
