When it comes to brainlessness? Well, I'm shameless . But ... I'm actually disconnecting, unplugging everything, taking apart as little as possible and physically moving my computer and its *stuff* to a new address this weekend. And (I probably should know this, but I trust you people to know most everything better than I do) I need to know if there's anything slightly or largely extraordinary I have to do to this thing before I cover it up and throw it into a truck (it's never been budged from this desk in eight years now, and arrived back then in many large unopened boxes requiring excessive construction). Probably nothing special will need done? But I figured I'd better ask before I totally mess it up. Any tips or suggestions (if any are even required) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance !

Photograph the back of your computer, so that you know where all the cords fit in.

Move the box itself in the back seat of a car, and pull the seat belt as tight as you can.

Copy all your important files onto an external storage device, eg, CD, USB drive, etc, and make sure all your program discs are handy (hopefully you will NOT need them).

I just saw this and would have said basically the exact thing as ozzz. Gats, I don't know how many photos you have, but also make sure those are *safe* too. Photographing the back has proven to be a lifesaver for me twice now. You *think* you will remember, but then begin to doubt yourself - well, I did anyway.

When I move my stereo, or anything else with massive amounts of cords, I mark the back and the cords with masking tape with numbers on them. When I arrive at my new destination I now know '1' goes into '1' etc, without needing to know exactly what they are.

That's what I do too MadMags. Either that or self-adhesive white labels wrapped around the cables with technical descriptions on them such as: 'small green socket' or 'small blue socket' . The photo advice is good. I might do that next time.

I just pull everything out then put it back later - all the holes are either colour coded or else things will only fit in one space. Didn't think of taking a photo - that would help on the speakers bit, that is always hit and miss when I plug those back in as they seem to be the exception to the above.

Thank you, everyone, for the tips ! I'll be *unplugging* any minute now ... so I'm sure all the suggestions will be useful in part or in whole. It looks color-coded back there, so that makes me feel like it shouldn't be too much stress?
However (I must remember, I must remember) that self-assigned 'brainless' level truly does apply, in my case ....

Well, unless you did something last night we don't (want to) know about, those are in fact colors, Gats. Good luck and I'm sure you'll do just fine!

Nah! I know it's very often brainy people who say that.

Ooops. I forgot to pop back in here and say another "thank you!" for all the suggestions. Clearly, they all proved useful as here I am, all hooked up and happy . I'm sure I'll have even more (potentially brainless) questions directly. I finally am using broadband - and little spots of it don't seem to be working like I expected. But it's new, and I'm new using it. I tell ya, though ~ it's nice to know I can pop in here and ask if I get my head completely stuck in the fence !
Gracias!
