Finnikin of the Rock - Melina Marchetta.
Yellow painted eyes tracked him, while outstretched claw-like fingers traced an icy line along his arm whenever he brushed against the jagged rock.

My nearest book is my fathers' copy of "The Bluejackets' Manual. "No transfer or exchange of uniform clothing may be made without the authority of the commanding officer."
Does this mean you have to track down the C.O. when you want to borrow clean socks?

My closest book is a Dictionary (as I have just been creating a new quiz) and the fifth word on page 61 is bibliophile n. book-lover. [F] If that doesn't count then my actual closest book is 'The Forest House' by Marion Zimmer Bradley.
The fifth sentence on page 61 is: Gently he turned her face towards him.
I have no idea who the people concerned are or anything about the story and probably never will. It is a book my brother is selling on ebay and is near the computer as he was taking a picture of it.

The nearest book was a washout, being the Eyewitness Travel guide to India. Page 61 was a map So second-nearest: 'For once, and in this particular case, the pre-conceived notion that one wave resembles another proved to be correct.' - 'The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear', Walter Moers

Even if you pinched this idea it was a very clever one, was fun to read the responses!

The Three Investigators. Secret of the Terror castle.
pg.10, line 26. "A haunted house?"Bob repeated, frowning. "How can you solve a haunted house?"

LOL - I LOVE this thread. My nearest book is a sophisticated Silhouette Nocturne romance novel : Doranna Durgin, "Jaguar Night." "He's really out of it," Anica said. "Maybe we should call 911." I haven't read it yet, though. But that sentence intrigues me. Y
