Thank you for the lovely compliments copago, djsgal, jar ... to focus cleanly on the icicles, if you can choose a focus mode other than autofocus, "spot" is good ... but the trick to throw a background out of focus is really in your aperture if you can adjust it on your camera. The lower the f.stop (the number) the more shallow your depth of field (focus). If your camera is mainly point and shoot you are kind of stuck with the capabilities of the focal length of your lens - you could try a macro mode or know exactly where in the frame your camera takes it's main focus from ...
but mostly, and easiest, is using your aperture to get the effect you want. In this case, i used f5.6 to throw the background out of focus ... hope that helps ...
edit: smaller the number means the larger the aperture is ... it gets kind of confusing that way ... (Tredici - my main camera is a Sony Alpha DSLR).
