Oh, the little kids would say it to us when we walked to school. Maybe it was an Alexandria thing. What neighborhood do you live in, in Cairo?

Isn't that near Al-Azhar University?
I don't remember a mall. It may be after my time 1978-79.

I lived there when the peace talks were being held. It was a good time to be an American in Egypt.

I worked on a dig in Fustat and hung out on the top of pyramids in Giza. Well not Khafre's. I wish that I could have gone to the one's out at Dashur but it was a restricted military area at the time.

The only thing I didn't like was the sand storms that came out of nowhere. I got caught in a bad one at Medum.

Actually Cairo was wonderful in the winter. Alexandria was bitterly cold. We wore parkas and long underware. The storms off the Mediterranean were bone chilling and the rain was salty.

Does your cousin work for Zahi Hawass? He's a funny man.

Zahi Hawass!
I have no idea, when I meet my cousin I`ll ask him about that man and tell you.

Wdstk, I would like to ask: What do you do now as you aren`t in Egypt? or you can work with this study in your country?

Also, I don`t know if you are a man or a woman , so I need to ask if women can work with such field? Is it possible?

I've worn an anorak at Abu-simbel - I did not need it but I was not too hot. On that trip we spent a night at Athen airport (which nearly put me off visiting Greece) as all airports in Egypt were closed by rain.

Zahi is the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities and Director of the Giza Plateau. He got his PHD from the U of Pennsylvania.

I'm female. It's tough to work in this field without a PHD. It's also tough to work in Egypt being a female. It's just a culture thing.

I teach high school history and also lecture for the University of Chicago, Oriental Institute, through the Museum Education department. It is a museum of Near Eastern antiquities.

I`ve finished the high school and gone to the university -AL-Azhar university- since about three years ago.

I am studing religious subjects there, related to all the kind of religons "Christian, Jewish, Buddhism, Islam...etc,

later I`ve joined the British council -where I knew about this forum : )- in order to improve my English language because according to my study we have to travel abroad the country and join alot with foreign people.

I am not sure if this is exactly what you mean by your question.

We teach that as a part of World History here in High School. I'm a Christian who grew up in an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood and went to school in an Islamic country. Ever visit the synagogues in Cairo or any of the Coptic churches and monasteries?

Really! good, its very important to know about different religons.

Yes, I`v been to some of the Coptic churches here in Cairo, such as -The Virgin Marry- in old Egypt, and -San Gerges- in Helioplis, its a part from our study to go to these palces and talk with religious christians,

But we`ve never visited any of the synagogues, that is because Jewish is not a customary religon here in Egypt, just visited some of it in Luxor&Aswan as a turism not as a real study about the religon.

The monasteries are Coptic Christian and out in the desert between Cairo and Alexandria.

The Jewish synagogues are in Cairo. They are in Old Cairo (Fustat). The one's interior is from 882. It's name is Ben Ezra. The Torah scrolls are very old there. There is another one in Cairo as well. I can't remember it's name.

Sorry, I misunderstood the difference between synagogue and monastery,

I mean we`ve never visited any of the synagogues, the monasteries also we`ve never been to any because it`s not allowed for such study, just met with some of the monks and nuns in the church.

Also for my good luck I met by accident a nun in the British council about month ago, but she wasn`t pleased to talk to me at all, even to look at my face : )

Dawn, from wich sects of christians are you?
