"Old Father William's Well-Ordered Universe" by Bill Richardson - it's a Bathroom Book (says so right on the cover) a "Compendium of Facts Figures and Formulae, Specifically Intended for the Bathroom-Bound (and Those Who Love Them)". Bill's a familiar name to many Canadians, from CBC Radio and, lately, from the Canadian Reader's Digest. He's a funny guy.

Oddly enough, yes!

Alexander McCall Smith's "The Good Husband of Zebra Drive" and "Blue Shoes and Happiness" from the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. That's such a charming series -- makes me want to visit Botswana.

Tony Hillerman's "Listening Woman". I thought I had read all of Hillerman's books but apparently not. My daughter snooped in my bookcase and didn't see it so she bought it for me -- how sweet!

"Hash House Harriers -- On You!" -- I used to run with a Harrier group and was thinking about getting back into it. It's a lot of fun as long as you aren't easily offended.

My sister sent me Eric Clapton and Pattie Boyd's autobiographies. I've already read them -- they both agree that Eric had issues.

I was very pleased with my presents this year. I received all of Colin Dexter's "Inspector Morse" series and also Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sign of Four" and "The Hound of Baskervilles". I have not read any of these, and am thoroughly enjoying my first taste of Morse.

I haven't read Colin Dexter yet, but he's on the list. You can't go wrong with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle -- wonderful books -- "The Sign of Four" is one of my favorites.

Like PDAZ I love the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith and I was pleased to receive 'The Miracle at Speedy Motors' for Christmas, which I have just finished, and which was as delightful as the others in the series. I was also given 'The White Tiger' by Aravind Adiga which I am really looking forward to reading. I picked it up in a bookshop a couple of months ago and thought it looked really interesting, but it was in hardback and I don't buy myself those books, so I was really pleased to get that.

I never get books for Christmas - historically, I either never need any OR have "wish lists" that folks usually find "weird" and impossible. But I got one this year ... unexpected, and interesting, and one I'd never even heard of before (perfect! - so I can't wait to dive into it). It's called "Picturing Men: A Century of Male Relationships in Everyday American Photography" by John Ibson. It's not especially heady/artsy (or murky?) as the title might suggest. It's pretty much a photographic study of the sometimes static (and often stoic) relationships that exist between men. Like brothers, co-workers, fathers/sons, mates. The photos themselves are fascinating - going back to the 1800s.

Gats, that reminds me of a picture in, of all places, my United Farm Women's Cookbook. Two men standing out in the field talking, next to a tractor. One is obviously the farmer, and the younger man is in a tux. On his way to his grad, or his wedding maybe, and stopping for a word with the neighbour, or maybe an uncle... Just a great picture, and not the kind of photo you ever see.

I got a sweet looking small book entitled "A Dog Named Christmas" and a bookstore gift card. None of my favorite authors have anything new on the shelf right now so I'll be tucking that in my pocket for a bit later.

I got a book called "Deafening".. I can't recall the author's name right now, but it's really good so far! It's about a young deaf girl who falls in love, and then her boyfriend goes off to Europe to be a stretcher bearer in the war (WWI)

I got (and I am so excited I can hardly type it out lol) a SIGNED Robert A Heinlein first edition! AND I got one of the numbered, doubled signed by editor and illustrator, editions of Moonbase Alpha too.... oooooo am snoopy dancing just thinking about them
My signed 1st isn't here yet though, we decided to ask the seller to wait to post it so it wouldn't get caught up in the Christmas post as it's coming from overseas, but it should be here next week and I can hardly wait. I will read it once then put it away very very carefully out of reach of the babies sticky fingers!

Yes. I got 2 books off my uncle and a gift voucher for a book shop from my dad.

The books I got from my uncle were:
Le Ba, by Irene Nemirovsky and A good woman by Danielle Steel. I haven't read them yet I'm currently reading some other stuff to do with the work I want to do.

The book I got with the gift voucher was People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks

My daughter is real bookworm, and I bought her the Thomas Harris books about Hannibal Lecter as a stocking filler. She now has over 800 books, and we are fast running out of space!

She also received 4 book tokesn at gifts, which she has yet to spend.

Just two: Mrs Beaton's Puddings and sweets and The Secret Shopper's Revenge which is really funny and oh so apt. Only light fiction, but thoughtful extra in my Christmas stocking.

My daughter bought me 'Long Way down' by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman. It's the narrative of their 15,000 mile motorbike trip from John O'Groats in Scotland to Cape town.
The journey was also made into a TV series, much of which I'd watched, so she was on safe ground buying me the book.
