CANBERRA - Not a bird, or a plane, but a kangaroo has crashed through the bedroom window of a Canberra family's home before terrorising its unsuspecting occupants.

The family, from the suburb of Garran in Canberra's south, were awoken in the early hours of Sunday morning when their pet dog began barking from the garden.

Moments later, a kangaroo burst through a three metre high window of the house's master bedroom and onto the bed where Beat Ettlin, his partner Verity Beman and their nine-year-old daughter Beatrix lay.

"My initial thought when I was half awake was: it's a lunatic ninja coming through the window," Mr Ettlin said on Monday.

"It seems about as likely as a kangaroo breaking in."

While the family took refuge under the blankets, the injured animal proceeded to jump on top of them, gouging holes in the furniture and smearing blood all over the walls.

The next thing Mr Ettlin heard was his 10-year-old son Leighton screaming from his bed: "There's a 'roo in my room!"'

"I thought, this can be really dangerous for the whole family now," the 42-year-old said.

A chef, originally from the Swiss city of Stans, Mr Ettlin followed the thrashing and bleeding two metre tall marsupial and wrestled it into a headlock before dragging it down the hallway and out the front door.

Left wearing just his shredded underpants and with scratch marks on his leg and buttocks, Mr Ettlin described himself as "lucky".

"I had just my Bonds undies on. I felt vulnerable," he said.

As quickly as it had come, the kangaroo vanished into a nearby reserve and the family reported the intrusion to police and wildlife authorities.

Ms Beman praised her husband's courage and said she didn't know many men who would go head-to-head with a kangaroo.

"I think he's a hero, a hero in Bonds undies," she said.

Brisbane times story

Obvioulsy it could have had a different ending but since it turned out okay I just had to laugh. You wouldn't know what the heck had happened if a 'roo came through your window.

And a good news story featuring Bonds! Who knew?

I know a kangaroo can be very dangerous. Especially, an injured one, but all I can think is...What the heck are 'Bonds' undies?

It's a brand of undies, veronikka. But who knows, maybe that guy thought they turned him into James Bond!

Sounds like me a few years ago. I worked night duty, husband had taken the kids to the local football match, and i woke up mid afternoon to hear really weird noises on the back verandah. Peeked through the kitchen window to discover all five sows had decided the pig sheds weren't warm enough and my verandah was a much nicer option.
Do you think I could get them to go back ?? Not bl**dy likely ! Was a combined effort with husband, four kids and self when they got home.
The worst bit of all was that the toilet was on the verandah, and there was one sow I didn't trust and would never go into the pen with....

Never had that large an animal in the house, but, my neighbor once ran over in nothing but a towel as a squirrel had popped its little head down from a grate in the ceiling at her.

Another story I heard from the insurance claims person. They said the weirdest claim was from someone who had a turkey inside the car who tried to escape and bashed itself against the windows from the inside and scared the driver to death who didn't know it was in the backseat.
It was a wild turkey and I can tell you that they're absolutely huge here in my area.

I've heard of deer crashing through windows and birds, but never a kangaroo.

Perhaps the family could pay for damages by doing advertisements for Bonds'.

The way most Australians feel about Bonds at the moment if the family did advertise for them they would be repairing more than one window.

Bonds recently, this week I believe, announced that they would be sacking thousands of Australian workers and moving manufacturing offshore. The CEO has given herself an incredibly huge wage/bonus and the Australian government is considering starting action to recover about 15 million that it has given to Bonds for staff training etc.

That the husband and wife mentioned Bonds is just unfortunate timing or a bit of a "stir" that the press has picked up on.

That may have something to do with the fact that you live in America.

I am an Australian and it's the first time I have heard of a kangaroo jumping through somebody's window too.
