Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was recently touched by an Afro-American woman (Michelle Obama)in a significant breach of royal protocol. Not since Jimmy Carter kissed Her Majesty the Queen Mother on the lips and the Australian Prime Minister touched the Queen's spine while guiding her to the proper location has there been such an outcry.

One person who deserves an outcry is the Obama Administration's Chief of Protocol for dereliction of duty. President Obbama and Mrs. Obama should have been briefed on the various requirements/social niceties of the counttries they visit to prevent embarrassment on both sides. Our Protocol guy should cry on his way out.

The queen put her mitts on Mrs Obama first, so Mrs O returned the favour.
At least she was quieter than some of the others in the photoshoot, it's being yelled at or near that little old ladies find disconcerting.
I think you'll find it's Buck House protocol fiends and royalist newspaper columnists that are in a tizz about this rather than her Maj.

All very strange. At least Lizzie didn't look shocked as she did when the former Australian PM put his hand on her back!

It all looked a little condescending to me, rather in the manner of a gracious hostess steering a bewildered old aunty to a comfortable seat at a family party. Which would have been OK if it had been Her Maj visiting the Obamas on their home turf.

I guess it's really open to interpretation. I choose to see it in a positive light and suggest that it showed affection and politeness rather than condescention. I think the papers/media like to make these little things adversarial so that they can sell advertising, but I'd rather not take the bait.

I'm more perturbed by the fact that one person's skin colour was alluded to, but no-one else's.

Like ysmay pointed out, controversial sells papers and gets people twittering.

I was puzzled by the fact that vendome is a Francophile, and yet seems annoyed at the breech of protocol.
Don't you remember what the French did to their queen?

Although I'm busy outside, I just had to come back in and expand on my post. I'm not just perturbed, I'm offended. That is a racist, uneducated remark, and I'd like to know what the fact that she is an "Afro-American" has to do with it?

It has absolutely nothing to do with it, hence controversial, offensive, provocative and a dispute starter.

I agree with that completely and find this disgusting. My comments have nothing to do with any news portrayal of the situation because the news would never, in this day and age, present the story in the same manner and with that disgusting 'headline'.

I agree with ysmay in that "it showed affection and politeness rather than condescention." There is however no politeness in the title of this thread and it is extremely condescending. I can only wonder what members of FT who aren't 'caucasian' will think if they happen to see this. Shame on you.

And that's exactly why I'm closing this thread.
