if our teens think these things are so "cool", why does it embarrass them when we join in the fun?
You wouldn't think the teens might worry that we'll figure it all out would you? We might discover what they are up to!
We'll I'm not a teen anymore, but I'm not far off, so thought I'd weigh in. It doesn't bug me that my parents have cell phones, Ipods, etc. And wouldn't bother me if they want to use Facebook or similar sites to connect with their old friends or coworkers, or whatever. What would bother me is them checking up on my page, my pictures, seeing some of the things I've done. I have even my brother blocked from seeing my Facebook profile and notes and pictures, because despite being 18 years old, he would still look at some of these things, and go to my mother and say "Look, she's smoking!!" or similar.

Oh, good grief--is this 2009 already? Let's see, I'm registered at hotmail.com with a 1901 birthdate. That's quite an exaggeration, however. Yum, Sue--my mom made pies out of the wild blackberries we kids picked in Florida. Unfortunately, we got as many chiggers crawling under our skin as we did blackberries in our pails. But now I see the gadget is spelled Dave's way: BlackBerry. OK, I've looked at the BlackBerry, Palm, and Twitter articles at Wikipedia and sorta get the idea now. The first I heard of Twitter was when one of our smarter elected officials sent a tweet from Iraq a couple of months ago. As for BlackBerries, our Governor is famous for carrying one in each hand. And Palm Pilots are "so last year"--last decade, last century, last millennium--they have been superseded by the Palm Treo. My son has an iPhone that lets him read my emails no matter where he is. Well, last week in the Aleutians he had no coverage. What a coincidence--just this second my husband walks up and tells me to join Facebook so he can interact with his scattered brothers and sisters--aged 45-62. Our oldest child will be pleased, the younger two will be amused but won't add us as friends.

Well I think once you're old enough that you've got pictures of your kids on your Facebook rather than pictures of you doing kegstands or whatever, it's okay to have your parents as Facebook friends I've continued thinking about this, and I'm not really sure where I stand on this in the case of younger teenagers. I understand the parental duty to look out for them, but I also know that at age 15 I would have been mad to have my parents checking things like my Facebook profile to see if I was drinking or anything. Now it's really more a case of they don't need to know. I'm 21, they can't 'punish' me for anything they may see on my Facebook. It's just probably better for both me and them if they don't see or read about some of my exploits.

Regardless of age, I think the younger crowd feels a need for their "space", you know? Hence "MYspace". Teens have their parents blocked from their Facebook - I know several college students that blocked their parents. It is finally the age of more "freedom" - they don't feel the need to have a leash!
However, some teens do need their parents looking over their shoulders, I'm not saying they don't. That is exceedingly obvious.

I have a friend who's completely addicted to it whereas I simply don't understand the attraction.
This is my situation totally. I don't have text or internet on my cell phone yet, so I only use Twitter on my computer and that's just not convenient. I really don't get it. When I check up on people I "follow," it always seems to be that they're having a one-sided conversation with someone else. It's a little irritating.
My friend, however, loves it and spends a lot of time on it. She sends "private" tweets to me about book markets and NYC events that she finds, but these come to my email, so I end up not being on twitter much.
I'm not against any way for people to communicate. Anything that gets people together is great. But you need to have a reason, right?

GG, you've got that exactly right! I really can't imagine doing that. I'd prefer to NOT know about ANY family member on FB or any other personal site. My youngest, is almost 29, (and Not a member of any) and she would laugh, if we 'bumped into each other' on some "odd" site! I prefer to be anti-social, now and again.

Blackberry, BlackBerry, all the same to me. The only blackberries I know about are the fruit. Why do they have to take perfectly good words which have been in use for a very long time and apply it to something completely unrelated. It isn't only blackberries either, just look at the word 'gay' - but perhaps that ought to be the subject of a thread elsewhere. If they invent these gadgets they ought to give them new names, ipod is fine and a case in point.

Somebody from the Wall Street Journal must have peeked in on this thread and wrote an article for our benefit. Here's one paragraph: Quote:
Even faster than Google, Amazon and eBay in their days, the three-year-old Twitter has become deeply embedded in the culture. President Barack Obama twittered the words, "We just made history," on the night of his election. It was a twittered image that first captured the forced landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River. Scores of people trapped in the Mumbai terrorist attack twittered desperately for help. And in a much discussed event, a San Francisco technology writer twittered his surprise to discover his home was being broken into.

Ok - 2 questions for the Facebookers among us... 1) Is there a way to have a page without having to give Facebook the password to the email account and having every.single.address in the book sent an invitation? or a way to have a look round/browse without signing up? 2) What (dare I even ask...) is a kegstand? Is it an American thing? I can hazard vague guesses lol but my "inquiring mind needs to know..."

I have never had to give Facebook the password to my e-mail account, so it can be done. Just don't ask me how, as I cannot for the life of me remember..
When I first signed up (which was awhile ago, things have changed; when I first started using it, it was meant to be a student network and slightly safer since not just ANYone could join.. you had to sign up for a college or university network, and provide your school e-mail address). Anyway, unless things have drastically changed, you only need to give an e-mail address, and then you set your own Facebook address. Mine is different from my e-mail password, so I don't know if something different happens if you give them the same password you use for that e-mail address. Also when I first joined Facebook, it gave me the *option* of inviting contacts from my e-mail list and MSN, but it didn't do it automatically.

Oh man, a kegstand is one of the most fun things I've ever done. Basically you hold on to the sides of a beer keg and do a handstand while two people hold your legs. Then you put the tap into your mouth and drink as much as you can. It's kind of lame when a guy does it but when a lady does it it quite fun.
For the adventurous women that might want to try...
1. Don't wear a skirt, lol. It won't defy gravity.
2. Before allowing yourself to be turned upside down, secure your shirt by tucking it into your jeans. Again with the gravity thing.

I don't think Gothson has a facebook page - I could be wrong of course lol. I went to the site to have a look round and basically see what it was all about, but couldn't do it without signing up, and then they required my email (in fact iirc it was specifically a Yahoo) password before I could do that, so I didn't bother and still have no idea what a page even looks like :S
