Famed British cinematographer Jack Cardiff has died at 94. He is best known for his stunning color photography, especially on three Powell-Pressburger films: "Black Narcissus", "A Matter of Life and Death" (Remember how the film switched from a monochromatic Heaven to a lushly colored Earth?) and "The Red Shoes". His stint as a directory was not so notable: he directed Marilyn Monroe in "The Prince and the Showgirl" and Marianne Faithfull in "Girl on a Motorcycle". He titled his autobiography "Magic Hour" after the time of day most suitable for cinematography.
