I answered one question as "dislexia" where the correct spelling was "dyslexia" and it was marked wrong! Also another question I did not have the apostrophe before the s and it was marked wrong!! Is this how this site works??

If you do not use the correct spelling, then the answer is obviously not correct. So yes, spelling counts. That is exactly why we discourage quiz authors from using fill-in-the-blank questions that have answers that are difficult to spell, and punctuation is not allowed in most categories.

Yes.

It's called getting the answer right. Or wrong.

If spelling's a challenge for you, you could avoid the Fill-Me-In game and concentrate on the other hourlies, which are mainly multiple choice. On untimed quizzes, it's fine to check your spelling with a dictionary.

Welcome to the site, and happy quizzing!

Hi, Marjoe - I see you're from South Jersey. I'm from northern NJ. Welcome

Yes, spelling counts. It is part of the correct answer. As someone who often knows the correct answer, but not how to spell it, I feel your pain. However, the above comments are correct. Part of getting the right answer for a fill-in is knowing how to spell it.

It's the same way that I can't moan and groan (well I CAN, but no one cares LOL) about not getting a lot of points for taking too much time on the hourlies.

With the hourly fill-ins, you need to know the answer, know how to spell, and do it at super fast speed. The latter two requirements are problems for me, but that's the nature of the quiz.

I think in the apostrophe question you actually inserted an apostrophe where there wasn't one. Mother's ought to have been Mothers, as in plural of Mother.

Why not just send a correction notice in on the quiz, identify the question, and let the editors see what issues may or may not exist? They can make any adjustment that would be fair to everyone, and also meet the current guidelines if it does not. This would totally take care of your concern. Just trying to help. :-)

Just please don't send a correction when you're spelling the answer incorrectly - we can't add every incorrect variation and sending a correction notice when there's nothing wrong with the quiz just wastes time.

Hence the reason I was instilled in spelling words correctly. Unfortunately, there are far too many times where words are misspelled. However, there are plenty of dictionary sites online that can help with spelling a word correctly.

Of course, if the quiz has the word spelled incorrectly, by all means please send a correction notice!

Just adding my two cents worth on making sure it's spelled incorrectly before you send a correction note - please make sure you remember the difference in UK/US spelling.

Both versions are acceptable on this site.

I'm Australian so follow UK spelling and have had a few correction notices from US people informing me I've spelt things wrong - and I'm sure it happens the other way around too.

Great point, Midget. The 'u' in words that end in 'or' in the US or 'our' in UK/Aus is a great example.

Most people know about the or/our difference, and allow for it, but a lot of people don't know about "s" vs "z" (realize/realise), or the way BE has of doubling letters, such as the "l" in "travelling" (or, depending on how you look at it, the way AE has of dropping a letter). And then there is the odd "e' - judgement/judgment for example.

If you are writing a FITB question, both spellings need to be included as acceptable options.

Have to admit I made a mistake there on a brain teaser.

One I hadn't thought of was 'tre' vs 'ter' at the end of words. I was writing centre/center.

Amusing thing on that one was that I'd spelt it the US way LOL

Glad that one wasn't now when I might have made someone lose the early bird badge because of my mistake!

There are times I'll spell traveling with two "L"s, and others I'll spell it with one...just depends on the mood I am in I guess.

I guess I don't understand why there are different "dialects" of English.

The "rule" for US English is that the consonant is doubled if the stress is on the final syllable. So "comit" becomes "committed" or "committing", but "travel" stays "traveled" or "traveling". Admittedly, there are exceptions, but that is how it is supposed to work.

Sue, that's one I've checked up on, and both ways are correct.

Right, they are both correct, I was explaining why it is one way in the US and one way in the UK. Both variants are correct, it's just that there is logic to why the consonant is doubled when it is.

Chalk it up to the linguist in me liking to share the rules.

Oh, right--I missed your "US" English. Sorry.

Do you know Romalda Spalding's 70 phonograms and 29 spelling rules? She missed that one--which is a pity. As a girl I was taught when to double consonants before adding a suffix, but I never heard of the Spalding rules until my second daughter was taught that method in school.

Taken from queproblema's link:

Quote:

The letter q is always followed by u and together they say /kw/. The u is not considered a vowel here.

What about the rarely used word "qat"? As ozzz2002 is a Scrabble linguist, he may have other words where there is not a "u" following a "q."
