I saw that on the news the other night. I was surprised they even had one. It looks like the flu scare might actually improve his lot, if they go through with the idea of getting him a mate. It's too bad they felt they had to quarantine him, but I hope that his keepers (or whomever) are using it as an opportunity to educate the zoo visitors about how flu works.

(In case anyone is wary about clicking on links) They were given him (and a mate) for the zoo by the Chinese. Unfortunately his mate was killed by a bear (?) I don't think the Afghans are going to win the Gerald Durrell Prize for zookeeping any time soon...

I don't see the problem? Judging by that picture, he looks as happy as a pig in muck and according to the story they've simply put him in his winter quarters. Plus, given Afghani religious views, he's in no danger of ending up as chops!

Very sensible, Mopsy, but I still feel sorry for a) a poor pig who's probably wondering where all the people went b) a poor pig all alone c) people who think a pig can give them swine 'flu
Call me an anthropomorphic romantic!

a and b) he has keepers c) er... swine flu... *thinks* ... swine flu, pig flu, comes from pigs!
There's already been a case of humans giving that flu to pigs so that Afghan pig should be grateful he's being kept away from all those nasty humans with their germs and diseases!

The pig should consider itself lucky it's Afghan, not Egyptian. Egyptian authorities have seemingly gone into panic mode, and began the wholesale slaughter of the country's 300,000 pigs

There was a story about a family in Egypt whose herd of pigs were taken from them and slaughtered. The family was worried about how they would make their livelihood without their pigs. An American family read the article and decided to help.

That's a lovely story, ladymacb. It's nice to know there are good people like that out there. I hope no Germans visit Egypt if there happens to be an outbreak of Rubella...
