Please note. This is not a debate on if it exists or not. One of the issues causing global warming is the melting of the ice because the white colour reflects sunshine thus keeping the earth cooler. Would it be worthwhile making it compulsory to paint all rooftops white and even all trains and trucks. If that would not be significant would it be worth bombing isolated areas such as the Andes, away from populations with white paint. As a para greenie this does not thrill me, but neither does global warming.

I saw on the news just this past week about what a good idea it would be to paint all the rooftops white. They even went so far as to question whether or not it would be feasible to paint the roads white.

There's no doubt that wearing white keeps you cooler in the sun than wearing black or a dark color does. It's probably NOT feasible to paint roads white; they certainly wouldn't stay white for long, but I think rooftops would be a good idea.

I saw a programme where some scientists were planning to put an array of very thin lenses between the earth and the sun in such a position they would be half way so they would stay in position regarding gravitational pull. Has anyone got any other strange or common sense ideas they have heard. It might be the case that something weird and simple may answer the problem.

Something reflective would be better than just white.

It was mentioned on the news story that the ancients really knew what they were doing when they made the houses white. It sure makes for a pretty picture, though.

What a good idea! In theory. If you live in a tropical climate it is a good idea to paint your roof white. In temperate and colder climates it's not a good idea. In the winter we want a dark surface to absorb heat.
Even if it were possible to paint every horizontal surface in the world white it would not equal the current surface whiteness of the North or South poles. If the poles reflected warming light, the poles would not be melting, would they?

I really think that global warming is (1) not caused by human endeavour and (2) it is cyclical with sun spots and has happened throughout history. Our puny activities cannot possibly cause the whole Earth to warm, given the atmospheric volume of Earth's surface and how miniscule an amount we even matter to such an enormous volume.
Also given that 4/5ths of this planet is water, we humans are giving ourselves swolen heads to think that we can make a difference.

I wish the population of the world could be allowed to see this conclusion offered by the mainstream media which they rarely are. I know this thread was supposed not to be about the causes or not, but as you mentioned such a concise and accurate summary of my own conclusion (after 9 years of reading everything I could on the subject from reputable sources and rarely reported in the media) so many ex-believers are now coming to the same view I wonder how many it will take before the mainstream starts to question it as well?

and then.....

Succinctly and wonderfully said. Thanks, guys. Unfortunately the 'main stream media' run in a herd mentality -much like the voters/special interest groups they pander to.

Maybe with the latest figures showing the planet cooled again in the last year they may have to change horses fairly soon.

latest figures

and then the killer, they show a graph showing a descending staircase ever since this nonsense started. How on earth (no pun intended) can they justify the huge G8 meetings and scare stories when the actual figures show exactly the opposite (and the polar bears and ice caps they use constantly as well). Growing deserts are from irrigation and clearing scrub around them, and any polar bear losses are from hunting. Easy to find it all out with the internet, the BBC never mention it and everyone seems to trust them for some reason.
