Lovely shot Paul, just the kind of photo I've always wanted to take.

Edited to add:
(Yes I know some of mine are similar with the background reflected in the water but nowhere near as good as Paul's.)

Let's follow with Sierra Nevada, but this one is in Spain in the province of Granada, it can be seen from hundreds of kilometres away as this picture is taken only ten minutes away from my home. This is our closest and only skiing resort in Andalucia, it is about a 350km drive from me.

Thanks, Martin. Much of the trick is in the exposure. A camera set on automatic is going to be fooled by a large area of dark water and therefore overexpose the sky and other lighter areas, like rocks and cliffs, leaving them washed out and drained of color. Over the years I've learned what kind of scenes are liable to do that, so if I'm using an auto-exposure camera, I first make it read a brighter area by holding the release down partway, then aiming it how I want it framed, then pressing it all the way. A lot of cameras work this way, and with practice you can control your exposures on the fly as it were.

Thank you Paul, tricks of the trade are always welcome. I've recently bought a new digital camera with loads of functions my old one lacked and I'm itching for the chance to use it properly.
For now, one taken with my old one (at 70 MPH from the window of a car.) One of the peaks in Snowdonia, North Wales:

Lovely Mt. Shasta photo, ClaraSue. Gave me an excuse to finally getting around to scanning this Kodachrome slide I took of it in 1965. Definitely a case of being in the right place at the right time.

Lovely mountains, all! From cold pointy things to hot now - This is Arenal volcano in La Fortuna, as seen from our hotel balcony, October 2008.

One of six active volcanoes in Costa Rica, Arenal is the most active, and spews lava and smoke almost nonstop since the 60's. It erupted the day President Kennedy came to Costa Rica. It's erupted seven times since then, the last being in May 1998. This photo was taken on an overcast day without a cloud in the sky. What you see is smoke. The bits of smoke on the sides are rolling molten lava.

Edited to add wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arenal_Volcano

Pardon me, it was Irazu volcano that covered President Kennedy in ash, not Arenal. http://www.cocori.com/library/travl/jewels.htm

Some lovely architecture there guys. Speaking of looking up, I made this photo this morning. Looking up at my windchimes on the front porch.

Thanks lady. I'd been invited to join a brand new group on Flickr called "Looking Up", so I shot a bunch that morning for their pool. It got me to thinking about different POV's which is always a good thing.

Nice photo Mags, you really have an eye for an interesting and different picture. The wind chimes remind me of the pipes in a church organ...

This organ is in the new part of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial church in Berlin.

A peace protest against the occupation of Lebanon by Israel, taken near The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin 2008. We'd seen them gathering in another part of the city earlier in the day and this was their destination. The police were out in force (and armed!) but we didn't see any trouble although it played havoc with the traffic. I was told that there's often some kind of protest going on in Berlin.
'What are you protesting about?'
'What have you got?'

August 6, 1966. I took this Kodachrome slide of the "International Days of Protest" march as a friend and I drove along Market St. in San Francisco. The film advertised on the theater marquee is nicely ironic. On a historical note, this block of buildings is gone now, replaced by Hallidie Plaza, named in honor of Andrew Smith Hallidie, the inventor the cable car.

August is a very loose connection as this photo was taken in August in Sorrento, Italy.
