Even though the song wasn't created specifically for the show, I love the intro of "Big Love". The Beach Boys song "God Only Knows" is really beautiful and the intro is just great all around. Every time I watch "Big Love" I make sure not to miss the credits.

Sorry, RedViking, but Jerome Moross wrote the "Big Country" theme; you may have been thinking of Bernstein's "Magnificent Seven" theme (used in the Marlboro cigarette TV ads of long ago).

Among my favorite themes are David Raksin's for "The Bad and The Beautiful" and "Forever Amber", Elmer Bernstein's lovely "To Kill A Mockingbird", practically everything John Barry wrote, from the James Bond theme to "The Ipcress File" (listen to how he uses the cimbalom!), all of Barry Gray's work for the Gerry Anderson shows, especially the Thunderbirds March, and John Carpenter's "Escape From New York/L.A." theme.

I like Joan Jett's take on The Mary Tyler Moore Show's theme,"Love is All Around". Check it out!

I just found this thread and was going to mention this one. It really is outstanding, and so was the show.

Some of my favorites are Cheers, Golden Girls, Pink Panther cartoon, and Growing Pains. I also loved the one for Greatest American Hero and Knight Rider.

I have never seen the show, but the theme from 'Van de Valk' is a lovely piece of music. It is called 'Eye Level', by the Simon Park Orchestra. It was the Number one single in 1973, on the UK charts, and it is one of those songs that everyone knows, but no-one knows the name of it.

"... I thought that I had the world on the end of a string,
I thought that I was a millionaire ..."

LOVE it, it was the first theme music which popped into my head before even opening this thread to read the discussion!

oh, and I loved the show as well

I like a lot of Mike Post's music (Quantum Leap, NYPD Blue, L.A. Law, Law and Order and Hill Street Blues.), but my favorite of all time has to be the Doctor Who theme in its many forms from 1963 to now.

I have been told my singing is uncannily reminiscent of Edith Bunker's vocals on that song.
