Recently we've been cleaning out our very overstuffed movie shelf, and I'm finding dozens of movies that my kids have never seen. Mostly, this is because when we happened to add the movie to our collection, they were too young for it. Now that they are both in their late teens, I keep saying things like "What? You've never seen "The Last Detail"? How could that be?"

So, in the last couple days, we've watched "Cool Hand Luke", "Slingblade" and "The Commitments". In all three cases, the response has been "What a fabulous movie, I can't believe I've never even heard of it."

So, what films have you introduced your kids to, or plan to, when they are old enough? If you don't have children, are there other people whom you have introduced certain movies to?

Still on my list, from our collection, are "Sometimes a Great Notion", "Hombre", "In the Heat of the Night", "Duel", "A Room with a View", "The Great Escape" ...

I'm at this stage with Boy.
It's interesting, isn't it?
He saw Chicken Run before The Great Escape, and his expression as he slowly realised why some scenes were familiar was hysterical!
He's not good with extended dialogue, over-emotional or romance, but there are a lot of other classics he's getting to grips with.
Lawrence of Arabia, The Name of the Rose, In the Heat of the Night
Flight of the Phoenix.
He's a great fan of classic disaster movies as well, The Poseidon Adventure is a particular favourite.

Years ago we watched "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World", and had the same experience - apparently, lots of it has been in one or another Simpsons episode.

My parents aren't really lovers of the classics, but my dad did introduce me to Murder by Death, Gone With the Wind, and Night Shift.

The guy I'm sort of seeing is definitely a movie lover and has been introducing me to some of his favourites (mostly ones that he liked when he was a kid or a teenager, that I was too young for when they came out), like WarGames and Ghostbusters

"Stand By Me" was a film I thought he'd really like to watch, though I wondered if it was appropriate since it was originally rated "R" and he's only nine. Since movie standards have changed over the years today's rated-R films are much more offensive than those from the eighties I gave in and let him watch it, he loved it BTW.

He also loves "My Dog Skip" - and I know he'll love "Big", but he's going to have to wait to see that one. I can't sit through the love scenes with him.

Other films that will have to wait will be "Breakfast Club", "Sixteen Candles" and "Grease". "Weird Science" will crack him up, but he's still too young.

I haven't mentioned any film classics like the aforementioned war movies because he would be lost right now. We'll give him a few more years before we unleash those on him.
