I'm sure there are many but two that I enjoyed: Kate and Leopold and The Final Countdown. Ken

I loved The 'Final Countdown,' too. Try renting 'The Philadelphia Experiment' JJ. I bet you'll like it.

'Time After Time' -with Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steemburgen- 1979. It's more charming than exciting, with really good performances, especially by Steemburgen. I liked the San Francisco background, too.

Probably everybody has seen the 'Back To the Future' series by now. But I still [almost] never get tired of Marty McFly, and seeing how one single incident can change things forever. The wild west segment was my favourite of the three.

The 1950's, H G Wells based 'Time Machine' is alright, but not on my A list. As rich and good to read as the novel is, the movie comes off as rather shallow and has a glossy '50s look to it. That's sometimes a problem with older movies...the costumers can't seem to totally make the break with whatever decade they're in and we get Max Factor channeling Victorian England. Not a pretty sight, with it's James Dean coiffed hero and futuristic teen who's made up to look like a scruffy Sandra Dee.
Oh well.

Another movie sort of worth renting, if you watch chick flicks is 'Somewhere in Time.' It's an absolute hardcore cult following who talk about this movie endlessly on the internet, and you'd better not cross them. For them it is the end all be all romance. For me, the premise is wonderful, but Jane Seymour is a bit wooden and she and Chris Reeve seem ill suited as a couple. Not to mention things are a bit 'too' clean and perfect at this 1901 Edwardian
hotel. Too many improbabilities, even for me and I'm bad about wanting to cut any time travel movie too much slack.

Several years ago, it was rumoured they were about to film Jack Finney's sleeper novel 'Time And Again'. This would have made the decade for me personally, even if the film adaptation wasn't very good.

'Tuck Everlasting' -also a pristine looking Disney movie but I love William Hurt and Sissy Spacek. It has a few elements of time travel, but is more accurately an examination of time and how it affects us.

'Peggy Sue Got Married' is a light comedy that my family always enjoyed. Nick Cage and Kathleen Turner make the perfect disgruntled couple. The screenplay is good and they got the look and feel of 1960 down cold.

There are lots more but it's almost lunchtime and I have to forage for groceries.

I like "Peggy Sue...." so much too! The cultural references alone are worthwhile, plus Kathleen Turner's reaction to hearing her grandmother's voice on the phone chokes me up every single time I see it; it evokes so much emotion for me to watch that one.

"Back to the Future", "Somewhere in Time", "Donnie Darko" and to an extent "Groundhog Day" are all favorites too, all for different reasons. "Groundhog Day" though is not so much about time travel as much as being stuck in time; that movie could have a thread all its own.

Somewhere in Time - ah, I love this movie. Even just thinking about Jane Seymour in one particular scene makes my eyes well up. A few years ago, we took a vacation to Mackinac Island, where the movie was filmed, and I got a thrill just standing at the spot where the two characters first met. There is a plaque at the tree commemorating this. Also, I know this is my mother's favorite movie of all time.

Peggy Sue Got Married - another favorite even though I disliked the voice Nicholas Cage used. I watched this one again just last week!

Twelve Monkeys - with Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt - easily my favorite time travel movie. If you haven't seen it, I suggest you go out and rent it right away.

I am grateful you mentioned this, Lisa. It proves I am not crazy after all! Was he trying to make his voice sound younger, maybe? It was sort of breathy and strange-not like his normal capable sounding voice at all.

I will now go out and rent 12 Monkeys because I trust your judgement. I'm a sucker for any time travel movie, to be honest. The more the better.

Groundhog Day is also a fascinating concept - like a complicated, visual zen exercise caught on film. There are entire study groups who have used it as a teaching vehicle concerning the tenants of zen buddhism. Again, this is one of those which isn't strictly about time travel, but more examines time, the chain reaction of small events, and how we react to them. I heartily recommend it to anybody.

Excellent taste being shown here :-). Always wondered why the annoying Nick Cage voice in "Peggy Sue", the "trying to sound younger" explanation seems likely.

I loved "12 Monkeys", but my favorite is either "La Jetee" (the inspiration for "12 Monkeys"), or the low-budget, mind-blowing "Primer" that came out a few years ago. Recently saw "Time Crimes", a Spanish time-travel film that's definitely worth a watch.

I agree with ktstew, Groundhog Day is a very good movie. Doesn't it feel sometimes that we're living the same day over and over again? Just sometimes, though!

There's a new movie that came out a few days ago, called The Time Traveler's Wife. It's about a man who has a special gene that causes him to time travel and the way that affects his marriage. It sounds very interesting, has anyone seen it? I haven't seen it yet, but want to.

Twelve Monkeys is terrific. "Jones is my name. I'm in insurance."

The original Planet of the Apes is pretty good too.

According to a different website, , it states that Nicholas Cage based his voice in PeggySue Got Married on Pokey of The Gumby Show and that he was almost fired because of it. Now why would he want to sound like Pokey? That just doesn't make sense, but that's what he did sound like.

Kate, let me know what you think of the movie.

Oooh, I forgot to mention one of my personal favorites: "Happy Accidents" with Vincent D'Onofrio and Marisa Tomei. This movie is just SO GOOD, and it is one of those that I missed when it originally came out because it didn't get released internationally and I was out of the US then. Finding this title, for me, was a happy accident and I love, love, love this movie!

I know I raved about this in another thread, perhaps one about little-known or independent films. It's about a man (Sam) who comes to the present to find a woman (Ruby) whom he fell in love with by seeing her in a photo. Unbeknownst to Ruby he's from the future and he's on a personal mission to save her from becoming the victim of a future accident. He comes into her life after she's had a string of failed relationships, and though he's not truthful about his past (as a requirement of his time travel he has a programmed life history that he must adhere to), they enjoy each other immensely. While some of her friends find him oddly intriguing others just find him odd. Her family really takes a shine to him just as she becomes more and more suspicious of his behavior when he begins to suffer from the side-effects of his travelling. It's an extremely thought-provoking and entertaining movie, with a few surprise twists and an interesting appearance by Holland Taylor in the role of Ruby's therapist. I know it sounds a bit like "Somewhere in Time" but it's so much more than romance stretching over the decades, it's a smart movie with a scientific flavor.

I'm still unpacking from our move, but I am now determined to find this DVD and watch it again and I'd love it for someone else to see this and discuss it here!

Glad to find this thread, as I am usually willing to watch/read anything involving time travel. You've all already named most of my faves (Philadelphia Experiment, Peggy Sue, Final Countdown, Back To The Future series), so not a great deal to contribute on my part there. (But I would like to say that Nic Cage's voice in Peggy Sue is by and far the worst part of that movie!)

One classic no one has mentioned yet: "Planet of the Apes" (the original). The final scene surprise took my breath away the first time I saw it, and it's still my favorite scene in the film, even though I know it's coming.

I also enjoyed "The Kid" with Bruce Willis -- sort of like Peggy Sue in reverse. I haven't seen it yet, but will probably eventually rent "13 Going On 30" for the same reason.

I love the original "Terminator" movie -- which folks who don't know about my time travel obsession tease me about.

A couple of excellent films not strictly about time travel, but sorta: "Sliding Doors" and "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud" (which was also a novel).

It's the wrong room for this, but since you folks wouldn't be here if you didn't enjoy time travel -- my favorite book ever on time travel is "Replay" by Ken Grimwood. Give it a try...you won't be disappointed!

Looking forward to more recommendations here. I've already decided to pick up that Jack Finney book Kate recommended. Keep 'em coming!

Oh yes, Sliding Doors - that's a sweet movie. Even though she's adversarial, I really liked Jeanne Tripplehorn too. For a film to be enjoyable for me I have to like everyone in it, and I do here. Gwyneth is the star, but to me they all share equal billing. Her love interest is such a doll!

I love that bit.

And "Replay" is a cracker of a time travel book. I actually thought they were turning it into a movie.

All of my choices for good time-traveling movies are included in earlier posts :-)
I'm thinking my favorite is Twelve Monkeys because of all the red herrings. That was also the first movie that I thought Brad Pitt was worth all the hype! He did an excellent job in that movie.

I have to confess I've never seen Twelve Monkeys, though I do have it in my collection. If I ever get a VHS player again maybe I'll get around to watching it....or if I come across it On Demand I'll finally get to see what all the fuss is about!

Starfish 2, I'm like you - I do have a fondness for time travel movies ~ Talking about them here reminded me how many great films there are, and how many more are out there for me to still discover....

Star Trek where they got the whales. The humor was great and it was by far the best Trek film.

"The Lake House" with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves

NOT one of my favorites because I was lost and confused five minutes in, but my girlfriend loved it.

I only stayed interested because of Sandra

I will throw in "Frequency" as a good time travel movie that hasn't been mentioned.

"Frequency"

You're right. This is one of the best and for some reason I tend to forget about it. Lake House, on the other hand, I only like at all because it's got Sandra Bullock in it.

Ahh, Frequency, I had forgotten all about that one. I have to add it to my list because I really liked it and not just because Dennis Quaid is in it.

I watched Lake House again tonight and I guess I just still don't get it. I get so lost in their time travel notes to each other. I really like Sandra Bullock as well so that's why I sat through two times of watching this.

Was rushing to get to the end so I could add "Frequency" to the list, only to see you beat me to it.

Could we include "Time Bandits"? I've always loved that one.

I just came back half an hour ago from seeing "The Time Traveller's Wife". I really enjoyed it, though it is most definitely a girl movie - a real tear jerker, at least to our family (we've got emotional parallels in our family to this one). My daughter had read the book, and said they left out a lot of the complications in the movie, which is probably just as well - there is a lot of moving around in time, and if there had been real plot complications on top of that, it could have been incomprehensible. As it was, it was easy to figure out what was going on, and to follow the jumps. Both the Time Traveller and his wife are very likable, and you sure feel sorry for the poor guy.

What do you think, Agony..worth the price of admission, or should we wait for the DVD?

Primer was great. Really, really weird and a damn slow start, but in a way the beginning adds to the whole of the movie. I love the way some stuff is just never explained, too. You're left to your own conjecture.

Time Traveler's Wife the book was pretty good, but...due to the cast of the movie I think it might be one of those movies you wait for dvd.

Check out Deja Vu (2006), Denzel Washington travels back in time to try and save a woman from being murdered. I've watched most of the films mentioned i'm a sucker for anything involving time travel both in films and tv series as long as you don't think too hard about the paradoxes that may occur you'll be ok.
