Catering staff at a Flintshire Council canteen unilaterally changed the name of one of the UK's favourite puddings from Spotted Dick, to, you guessed, Spotted Richard. The excuse given was because of inappropriate remarks from a small minority of customers.
Is there any dish or foodstuff that you would consider requires a name change?

I always think it somewhat strange when people refer to a hot-dog cookout as a weenie roast. Having two younger brothers has given me a different mindset about weenies. I don't think of hotdogs when I hear that word.

Coffee cake. I don't like the taste of coffee, so whenever someone would offer me coffee cake, I'd always decline with thanks. It was only in recent years that I learnt coffee cake doesn't contain coffee. Silly me thinking it was along the same lines as carrot cake, banana bread, chocolate chip cookies...

Spooted Dick? Actually, I'm surprised we can type that word here.

People only started sniggering about that one in fairly recent years, it always used to be more of a US than a UK slang word.

Richard Littlejohn actually pointed out that 'Richard' is cockney rhyming slang for something even less appetising, as in Richard the Third!

I'm sure the good citizens of Flintshire are relieve to know that their local council has its priorities right.

I suppose Toad in the Hole is wrong on all sorts of levels, but I never think of toads when presented with it, only calories.

I say hands off our puddings!

I think Head Cheese needs to be changed. I love cheese and was startled when I saw this icky mess for the first time that it didn't have any cheese in it at all. And no, I wasn't going to eat it after I found out what was in it.

Seems to me that the name change only draws attention to the name; I'll bet they got even more comments after that!

LOL from over here, I can only think that "spotted dick" sounds like a reason to go see a dermatologist.

Well, it certainly does in this case. I'd have thought, if they had to change it, they could have chosen the equally time-honoured name of "plum duff." On reflection, though, I suppose that would bring the Trade Description enforcers down on them, since (like plum pudding) it doesn't actually contain plums.

Is that a translation from the French fromage de tête (i.e. the boiled and jellied meat from a pig's head, with maybe trotters and other odd bits thrown in)? If so, we call it pork brawn or simply brawn over here.

And it sounds like a bird to me! You know, a grey titmouse and a spotted dick. Yep, definitely birds.

So many people mispronounce welsh rarebit as "welsh rabbit" over here. Why don't they just call it cheese sauce
on toast.

What about my mother's speciality of Canary Pudding? Not a bird in sight; and for me Spotted Dick will for ever more remain so, and is as appetising (to me) as Jam Roly Poly, both gross and slimy.

When I was in the RAF every now and again the cooks prepared individual tinned steak and kidney puddings that were issued in field ration packs. The contents were cooked by standing the tins in boiling water for about 15 minutes. The result was what were usually called 'babies heads'.

"Blood" anything... no thank you.

Butt-, rump- or "fatback" anything is somewhat unappealing as well.

Blancmange! White, gelatinous, tasteless, lumpy pudding. Every time I hear the word I laugh.
"The Blancmanges from planet Skyron - they MEAN to WIN Wimbledon!" That will only make sense to Monty Python fans.
I think "Blandmange" would be a more appropriate name for this dish.

Pigs in a Blanket! An off putting name for an obscene appetizer. This dish should carry a Mature Audiences only rating.

What is obscene about sausages in bacon? Served with roast poultry such as turkey.

Ah, another of those language differences, your pigs in blankets are not our pigs in blankets!

The surrounding pastry and placement of sausages in said pastry - at least the way I have seen it served!

Sorry about that. Yes, I forgot that they are served differently on your side of the pond.

When I lived in England, I grew accustomed to calling foods by their "proper" names, but it took me quite some time. Navigating the produce aisle was especially difficult.

I think that 'Trifle' ought to have its name changed. Such a wonderful dessert is not to be trifled with!

This must be a regional thing in Australia but those little frankfurt thingies? I call them frankfurters but know people who call them "little boys". I just can't eat them when they're called that.

Yeah...we've always called them little boys. I admit that once I was told that, I had a little trouble eating them too

Reading Ren33's opening comment in the 'Bitten,Stung,Pecked And Clawed' chain has reminded me of one of our British delicacies which is 'Toad in the Hole'. This I fear has put many people off from sampling one of my favourite dishes.

It's called black pudding here. At least "blood pudding" and "blood sausage" give you a bit of a clue as to what it's about.

If we delete angels on horseback, and substitute oysters wrapped in bacon and grilled till the oyster is cooked and the bacon is crispy, are we striking a blow for clarity, or losing yet another picturesque and economic expression?

And would anybody, anybody at all, have eaten a Prairie Oyster if they'd known what it was first? That's the American Prairie Oyster, by the way, the one that needs to be eaten: not the hangover cure with hair-of-the-dog and raw eggs, which needs to be drunk or, better still, not.

Is the Prairie Oyster anything like the Rocky Mountain Oyster? (which, by the way, is not at all bad tasting. I quite liked it)
