wayman, I always thought that was something that my family said. I had no idea that others had heard it, too.

If we delete angels on horseback, and substitute oysters wrapped in bacon and grilled till the oyster is cooked and the bacon is crispy, are we striking a blow for clarity, or losing yet another picturesque and economic expression?
Alternatively, you could try my mother's approach, lifted from "The Encyclopaedia of Precious Names for Food".
My mother insists on calling Devils on Horseback (a variation of Angels on Horseback), "Oysters en Brochette". If she lived in New Orleans, it would be fine to use that term, as it is a regional dish. She lives nowhere near New Orleans.
Some people (my mother included) use the term Angels on Horseback when speaking of S'mores. Rocky Mountain or Prairie Oysters should be renamed, so as not to fool unsuspecting diners. Just my opinion.

Same here ClaraSue, thought it was just MY family and I hesitated mentioning it, but mom insists that's what everyone calls it - not just her.

I remember that phrase. It was/is a military term for creamed chipped beef on toast. Also known as SOS. I prefer creamed chipped beef. I make creamed turkey and serve it on toast (preferably rye) and love it! I looked it up and the first time it appeared in military usage was in the 1910 edition Manual for Army Cooks. Anyway, it's hard to change something that's been called one thing for so very long a time.

What is "chipped" beef? We don't have that expression over here.

Chipped beef is thin sliced beef (much thinner than jerky) that is cured, sort of drying it out, either by smoking it or salting it. For creamed chipped beef it is chopped up, added to a white sauce and then that's spooned over the toast. Since this goes back to WWI, I imagine it was the military's first style of what we would call today military rations. Adding: Here is a Wiki article about it. At the end they even have a link to recipes!

Yay - we have Spotted Dick back! The council have bowed to angry accusations of political correctness, and restored the original name. http://news.uk.msn.com/odd-news/article.aspx?cp-documentid=149868327

Congratulations and good luck to Sue and Sue's daughter - and don't panic! I believe the child's mother had gestational diabetes that wasn't very well controlled.
Mine was 6lb 5oz and not excessively uncomfortable for me. Hers is three of mine. Ouch!

In other news, the Associated Press reports that "Humble Bob" Shoudt won this year's International Burrito Eating Championship. Shoudt managed to eat 33 1/2 burritos in 10 minutes, while the runnerup, Hall "Hoover" Hunt, put down 30 in the allotted time. The latest results from other professional eating contests can be found on the web site of: The International Federation of Competitive Eating

Sorry, Sue -
I was so busy thinking about all the money one of my boys could make as a Professional Eater, that I missed your post.
What wonderful news! All my best wishes to you and your daughter.

Whoops, back to the topic! Quote:
Is there any dish or foodstuff that you would consider requires a name change?
Probably quite a few dishes don't match up to their name, for instance blancmange, it is normally candy pink, not white.
