I haven't watched this show in probably twenty years or more, but I saw CNN's article yesterday and was shocked to learn that after 72 years CBS's Guiding Light soap is ending. In a world now overrun with "reality" television, Guiding Light has gone the way of numerous soap operas before. Today was the final episode, and I was able to record and watch it; I was surprised how many characters appeared and possibly reappeared and that I still remembered them! The show wrapped up all the current storylines, even jumped ahead a year to see what was in store for some characters -- it looks like everyone got a happy ending.

Goodbye Guiding Light

I was shocked about Guiding Light, too. You'd think that after 72 years, it would have been enduring enough to be worth saving at any cost.

I started watching this show as a small child due to my grandmother watching it every day. Being forced to attend school all afternoon put a stop to that pretty soon. I started taping it in the early 80's when I got my hands on this amazing new technology called a VCR. As an adult, though, I found I just didn't have 5 hours a week to devote to it, so I've rarely seen it over lo these many years. I did try to keep up with the characters in a vague way -- some of them I've "known" my almost my whole life.

Now, all we can to is pretend these folks all lived happily ever after (no kidnappings, no presumed deaths, no extramarital affairs), which would never, ever happen in Springfield! (By my count, Mindy Lewis alone has been kidnapped 5 times.)

But I'm sure there's not a GL fan on the planet who didn't want to see Josh and Reva ride off into the sunset in the final scene. I guess we'll have to be happy and satisfied with that!

I have watched Guiding Light since way before I got married in 1962. I will miss it terribly. I think the ending was a litle "hokey". The only good thing was when Alan was able to save Phillip's life and was changed into a good man before dying. I think there was a lot more story left to tell. And did anyone notice that the girl who played Lizzie was very pregnant although it wasn't in the story.

Unfortunately, it's so expensive to produce programs like Guiding Light. That's why it came to an end, sad as that may seem. I even watched the last show, although I didn't tape it.

Many years ago, I met Brian Rosner, one of the editors of the show. He had come to Charlotte on business and I had the pleasure of guiding him around the production facility I worked for at the time. Prince of a man.
