I'm writing to ask you if you can translate an expression from English to Latin for me. It's also a name of a song by Michael Jackson and I searched all over the Internet, all sorts of dictionaries but I cannot translate it correctly...It's "Give in to me". Can you please help me?

I would say "Cede mihi" (or "Cedite mihi" if you're speaking to more than one person).

I think it a great shame that, when someone responds to a plea, and makes an effort to help, as Tabby Tom has done, that a person does not even respond and thank him.

Ren, I was thinking the same thing. This is not the first time someone has joined the forums in order to post a question, then the last logout time is the same time of the post. I also need to have something translated into Latin. I think I've got it, but I'm rusty, and I would be eternally grateful if someone would confirm (or shoot down) what I have.

English: "There never is enough time to do it right but there is always enough time to do it over."

Latin (my translation): "Ibi nunquam est satis tempus facere id rectum tamen ibi semper est satis tempus facere id iterum."

As you can see, there isn't much needed in the way of declination in this sentence.

It can be surprisingly difficult to translate highly idiomatic English into Latin.

I can't come up with anything close to the English which sounds like idiomatic Latin. I would tentatively suggest recasting the sentence from a different angle and saying something like:

“Ad rem recte faciendam tempus semper deest: numquam tamen deest ad iterandum.”

(To do a thing right, time is always lacking; but (sc time) is never lacking to redo it).

Thank you so much, Tabby! I'm actually trying to translate this for someone I know, so I will relay what you've told me to her and see what she thinks about recasting the sentence. You make a very good point about the sentence being idiomatic; I didn't even think about that, and I'm really not too surprised by the difficulty that presents. Unfortunately, the translation you posted went way over my head. It uses many aspects of the language I either never learned or have completely forgotten.

Basically, the way I broke it down was simply: regard "time" as the subject, just use "est" for "is", use present active infinitive for "to do", "id" for accusative "it" (this was the part I was least sure on), and "rectum" to modify the accusative. Then pretty much do the same thing for the other half of the sentence. If you have time, would you be able to tell me how you broke down your translation or how far off I am with mine? If not, I completely understand and you've already been a tremendous help.

As no one's had a go I'll go back nearly 40 years to my Latin book and have a rough go:

Non possibilis currat ab te, tu es semper post te.

The tenses may be a little off but sound right, and possibilis was used for lack of a better word. I actually remembered over half of that despite stopping it in 1972!

I'll give it a try too, though I am not sure at all about the correct grammar.

Ab ego nequet effugit, semper post tui.

We'll have to wait for our resident latinist TabbyTom to say the definitive word.

Triviapaul, I don't think I can claim that my answer will be definitive, but I'll have a shot at it. I'd suggest something like:

Te ipsum fugere (or effugere) non potes; semper enim post te ades.

I did wait a while for you Tom, but at least made me get my Latin book out after a long time. I got a few of the words right anyway
