I have had enough! I saw an answer in a quiz which read "better then you". This trend to use "then" instead of "than" drives me insane! It shows a complete ignorance of the way language is used. Some might argue that its meaning is obvious from the context, but that is not always the case, and it's just plain incorrect.

And yes, I did send a correction!

BTW, does anyone tell me how to type the symbol for "does not equal"? It's an = sign with a line through it.

Totally agree with you about the than/then thing. Another one that bothers me is when people think a contraction like "would've" is for "would of", when it really is "would have".

Checked about the does not equal sign... Turns out there is no alt key code for it. I found this nice chart that has the alt codes listed. Useful for as a quick reference for symbols.

The symbol is in the Windows Character Map. It can be copied and pasted into a post composition box but unfortunately, it won't display when the post is previewed. The symbol becomes '≠'. It would presumably be the same if finally posted. However, it will copy and paste into Notepad and MS Word if that's ever needed.

I think the only other alternative would be to make a small GIF image of the symbol, store in on an image hosting site (or free web space provided by your ISP) and paste the image code into a post at the required point when needed. Images in forum posts aren't normally allowed I believe but but maybe for something like that it would be acceptable. Is it OK to use an image where you want to use the symbol? I suppose it could be easier to just write "does not equal" .

To locate the symbol go to: 'Start (button) > Programs > Accessories > System tools > Character Map'. The list of symbols is huge. 'Does not equal' is in the Arial font about ¾ of the way down in the third column from the left. Select it, than (or 'then' ) copy and paste it into a page.

According to wikipedia, "!=" is a way of implying 'does not equal' when typing when you can't insert the proper symbol.

It also gets annoying when people misuse "it's" and "its".

The notation "!=" does mean "is not equal to", but it is most often seen in computer code.
