I really don't understand what you mean by popular countries.

Yes, I wondered if you meant for tourists to visit, for people to live in, for inhabitants, scenery, products, facilities, weather. Which?

Yes, I was also puzzled. In fact, I'm still puzzled.

If the question is about 'popular with foreign tourists', there are presumably figures available, though they may not all be compiled on the same basis.

Seeing as though it is the trend right now to hate Americans, how can USA be on the popular list?

Rather like brand name recognition, then. Love it or hate it, at least you've heard of it and could point to it on a map.

Spare a thought for the inhabitants of some countries who, when in Britain or the US, find that many people haven't even heard of their country.

When visiting Bulgaria in 2000, I chatted to a waitress in a cafe. She told me about a visit she had made to the UK and said in passing that she'd been taken aback to find that quite a number of Britons hadn't heard of Bulgaria. I hope the situation has improved in the meantime.

Sounds a bit like Australia and Austria..you would be amazed how many people confuse the two.

I saw recently the american family feud. They had to make a list of countries besides America starting with A. The only country they could name was Argentina. One woman said Asia and another man said Amsterdam.

Well, I am going to be different - the countries I find most interesting are (in no particular order)
Andorra
Burkina Faso
Estonia
Honduras
Kiribati
Marshall Islands
Nauru
St Vincent and the Grenadines
Tonga
Australia (saved the best till last)

I am sorry I still fail to understand your question. What is the criteria ? In what way are they popular?

Ren, I interpreted it as the countries I personally found most interesting..I'm not sure what the original poster Nickotopolous was getting at, but thats the way I decided to take it.
Maybe, it was the countries you hear most about in the news ?

Now of course, the person has deleted the first post in the thread, which now makes even less sense!
