Last Tuesday (26 January) was Australia Day. The preceding evening, we attended the annual Oz Concert (a multicultural event) which was held in the grounds at Government House. Government House is where the Governor (the Queen's representative in Western Australia) resides, so it is only open to the public on very few occasions each year. I took this photo of Government House at the conclusion of the concert. It is located in the heart of the city so you can also see some of the city office blocks behind it.

Another house today in Surrey, this is in Bookham about a mile from yesterday's. A very basic art deco design but perfect proportions and larger rooms and windows than most comparable others.

Lovely rabbits Sue, if I couldn't get another cat I think that would be my next choice.

An oddity. This photo I took of the recent full moon came out looking rectangular! No tricks, just a 7 second exposure (using a tripod).

Very cool picture Martin!

If anyone is interested, this past full moon was a special one for 2010.

The moon's orbit around Earth causes it to go through all its phases once every 29.5 days. It is not a perfect circle, but rather an ellipse. One side of this ellipse is about 31,000 miles closer to the Earth than the other. This "closest point" is called "perigee".

It just so happens that perigee happened to coincide WITH the full moon this time, which makes it the "biggest and brightest" full moon we will experience for the entire year.

This particular phenomenon also results in much higher tides worldwide (along with more pollution on beaches due to the higher tides lol)

Anyway, it was snowing where I live during full moon, so consider yourself lucky if you got to see it : )

Thanks Jakeroo. I saw it from the bus window going home this week, and wondered at its huge size. Beautiful.

A couple of doors away from where I work is a council car park. Some of the bays are 2-hour parking and some are 1/2-hour parking.
These signs have been erected adjacent to the middle of one of the bays so it's anybody's guess how long you can park in that particular space.

At first I thought that was the price for the parking Mothergoose. Then realized you live in Australia not the UK.

Thank for that info about the full moon, I had no idea it was such a special event. I'm glad we had a clear night. I felt strangely drawn to photographing it...

I managed to catch a star on this one as well.

I thought the same thing about the parking signs at first glance! Looked like a good deal Martin, that is another beautiful image.

I witnessed this standoff whilst waiting for the bus this morning. On the left is my neighbour's cat, Tigger, reacting to the "new cat on the block" who I spotted for the first time this morning. Luckily Precious is an indoor cat, or she'd have been in the middle of this!

I love funny signs. Safeman is a business that sells safety equipment such as fluoro-vests and steel-capped boots. The billboard above them has nothing to do with them, but it was a rather amusing juxtaposition. Someone else thought it was funny too, because it was also featured in one of the regular columns of our "West Australian" newspaper.

That's an ad you won't see in Britain Carole!

Here's a train approaching Wembley Park station from Neasden, the wall in front is about a foot higher than me hence the unintended inclusion. If I know I'm doing trains I bring a stool with me but this was a chance encounter.

I have to ask, "Is this sign really necessary?"

I tried to get some pics of the full moon, but none came out as I would have liked. Those are great photos, Martin. Dave, I particularly liked that photo of the train approaching Wembley Park Station. I'm not sure what it is, but I keep getting drawn back to look at it. Great photos, everbody! February is off to a great start.

This fierce looking fellow is a Burrowing Owl that has taken up residence not far from me. He is only about 8-10 inches tall and not afraid at all of humans. I can walk up to within 2 feet of him. I've taken many photos of him, but I wanted to show his incredible eyes.

I liked the train too, although when I took them I couldn't see what I was taking, I just reached over the wall and hoped for the best, and didn't have a clue what I'd see till I got home.

I didn't agree with losing the world famous twin towers at Wembley (now soon to be world forgotten twin towers) but as I was there had to take a picture of its replacement.

After a couple of long distance photos, here's one a bit closer!
This is a printed circuit board I had to repair. You'll see a crack across the board which broke 4 tracks. (The lighter lines.) My dodgy soldering did the job though & it worked afterwards.

Some lovely photos, animals, birds, moons, trains, buildings, funny signs... that's a lot of subjects covered, and we're still early in the month! Cool closeup there martin.

I came across this on my walk into town this afternoon.

I thought this to be pleasing iron work, yet it's nothing fancy, just rebar, in gentle decay.

Love the owl and the cardinal, and find the ironwork pleasing

I thought this was an interesting vase, or suchlike, pictured in the window of my favourite store which sells curios/antiques/vintage clothes and hats and all sorts of keen stuff! The owner is a friend, and she was trying to help me find something Chinese enough to fill the bill for the upcoming CNY theme. I have ascertained that no celebration is planned in this town, except perhaps at one church - and that seems to be a meal only, so... Anyway, this isn't Chinese at all, but I liked it!
