I also met your son at that FT get-together; he was quietly spoken, and a thorough gentleman. Besides this get-together, the other memory of your son that has stuck is this post of his, some 5 years ago back in Feb 2005 : Fire. It may take you a while to read them all, but there are many many posts in here by your son. My condolences to you and your family. May he rest in peace. [ fix typo ]

I am deeply saddened by this news.
Your son seemed like such a warm, kind, thoughtful man. I enjoyed discussing all sorts of topics with him, including many quite serious social issues. His intelligence and perceptiveness were always evident in these interchanges and I valued his comments and his ability to stimulate my own thinking. His playful humor was always a delight. He seemed to know exactly the right thing to say, at the right time. He was the kind of man you wanted to get to know better, and I am glad that I was able to meet him, and enjoy his company, through these Forums. I will not forget him.
Please accept my deepest sympathy for your terrible loss.
Chelsea

Roos has been around on the forum as long as I can remember. I never really got to know him, unfortunately, but from his posts, you can see that he led a interesting life, and also a very enjoyable one. He fought the awful disease with dignity and always raised a smile. On a personal note, Iif I am remembering right, his daughter was born about four years ago. At that time, Dad had died, and through my grief, I felt as if their was a "new life" somewhere in the world, which comforted me. My deepest sympathy to Roo's family - especailly his little girl - and all who were close to him. I find it lovely that familar names are posting their memories of Roos.

I read this last night and, really, I had to go lay down. A heart breaking tends to knock me unconscious, historically. I didn't know the right things to say then, and still don't. My deepest sympathies to you and all of Roos's family, idad. All I can (possibily) add to the other posts here is that, to me, he was a gentleman with great emphasis on the *gentle* part. A[n] (occasionally rascal-y ) "character" with much (much) integrity in that character, as he traveled. It's safe to say that there were those times I didn't quite agree with him (but more times that I did) --- but there was never a moment where I didn't respect the value of his perspective. And he never faltered when it came to one major issue: the man truly loved his family. And he was proud to say so. That further indicates the kind of fine man he was, even more. I'll miss him. I already do. I'll never forget one discussion (among others, but this one'll always stand out) I had with him. It was about an ailing rat named Zanzibar --- that he was especially fond of. I left it caring SO much about an unfamiliar rodent, and even about a species of animal that usually made me cringe. Only a guy like Roos could have presented that story with the heartfulness that he did, and turned my life-long phobia for what I thought was vermin into an adventure that resulted in my being wildly emotionally involved with his pet! He probably never realized just how often, in ways large and small, he changed peoples' lives in these forums.

I am so sorry to hear this news, idad, and I don't quite know what to say. I can't believe Cris will no longer be popping into the forums and bring a smile to my face (I too remember Zanzibar). I kept hoping 'Roos would recover and be back again more regularly. My condolences to you and your family.

Oh no. I always admired roos for his gentlemanly ways and his wonderful sense of humour. He was a gentle person, who always thought of others, a kind and considerate man and well-respected on this site. He will be sorely missed indeed. Wishing you, his family and friends there, the strength to deal with his loss. My deepest sympathies to you all. Fly high, dear spirit, soar free.

I think I met your son while editing his quizzes. He always had a good sense of humour with me.
I am sure he fought the good fight in the end.
I am very sorry to hear that he's gone and wish to send my condolences to you and your family.

A few minutes ago, I did something that I rarely ever do - I went searching for a very old thread that I contributed to years ago. During my search, I stumbled across a thread that Roos started on 5th February, 2004, called My Tombstone Epitaph. It took my breath away, finding it out of the blue like that. I really am not sure if I am doing the right thing posting it, but somehow it just seems too much of a coincidence that I stumbled across it today of all days, and that I am meant to re-post it for him.
This is what he said:
Here lies Roos. He was at times a wise man and at times a foolish man. He could see the humour in many things in life and could also see the sad side of it. He was a fair man mostly and tried to be an honest one as well. He lived his life as he wished to and had no regrets. He left the world surrounded by his 40 great grand children and his 22 year old wife at the age of 90. Rest In Peace Roos.............This is what I would like to appear on my tombstone. What would you like to appear on yours?
I think we are all agreed that he certainly was a wise, honest and fair man with a great sense of humour.
