Two well-known fixtures of movies and TV died recently. Peter Graves, brother of James Arness, was best known for his role as Jim Phelps on "Mission Impossible", though he starred in many films, including "Stalag 17" and "Airplane". Fess Parker was immortalized for his roles as Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone, but he broke through in a small role in "Them!" and also starred in such films as "Old Yeller" and "The Great Locomotive Chase" (based on the same true-life Civil War adventure that Keaton's "General" was based on).

RIP Peter Graves, but the news about Fess Parker took me right back to my childhood, and to this song:

I had forgotten some of the verses (and isn't there a final one about the Alamo?) but I used to know that song well. I still have my Davy Crockett knife, but I think the moth got my coonskin cap a long time ago.

RIP Fess/Davy and Peter
