Would The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, count as fantasy if it's set in World War ll? Its nothing like HP and definitely not like Twilight. It's a lot deeper than that.

I love it. Wouldn't count as fantasy though...more historical fiction.

I don't know if it would be considered epic, but you could try Laurel Hamilton's Anita Blake series. There are 18 books, I believe.

If you aren't into pornograpy of a pretty, um, unorthodox kind.. then stop reading once you reach "Obsidian Butterfly" in the Anita Blake series. There is no story line left after that one anyway, they just degenerate into sex sex sex. If you do like your fantasy ah, spicy, try Sherrilyn Kenyon's "Dark Hunter" novels - they are much better, more romance than porn.
Stand alone books are harder to think of lol.. I recently read "A Companion to Wolves" by Sarah Monette and Bridget somebody and really enjoyed it. It's not sci-fi-ey though, it's rooted in Norse mythology, but I loved it.

Just spotted the line about "har dsci-fi" - you could try John Scalzi - start with "Old Man's War" he is sort of like Heinlein without the morality lectures and very funny and poignant in parts too. Or Joe Haldeman's "Forever War" - there are sequels to that but it was originally intended to stand alone, and does so very well.
Jack L. Chalker's "Rings of the Master" is a quartet, but definitely qualifies as epic.
How about John Wyndham and John Christopher? I know they aren't modern as such, but their stories were well before their times and have easily stood the test of time

After reading through what you've all recommended, there are some good reads in here. However, you've omitted Lois McMaster Bujold whose books are just brilliant. Start with The Curse of Chalion, Paladin of Souls, and The Hallowed Hunt, and work your way to other novels.
