Back in November when I reached the grand age of 65, a couple of the children clubbed together and bought me a drive in a Lamborghini Gallardo. I finally collected yesterday. I was a bit worried because it's a long time since I drove any car with a manual gearbox, let alone a super-car such as a Lamborghini. No problems though. Much like riding a bike, you never forget how.

I was soon zooming around a 2 mile circuit like Schumacher (well, maybe not quite) under the watchful eye of my passenger/instructor. He rated me at 89 out of 100. I think I lost rating because of a slight hesitancy to go flat-out down the straights. A couple more laps and I'd have overcome that I reckon. The drive is only 3 laps however. Not long to get to know the car properly but far enough for a super thrill!

What a great present that was. The weather was wall-to-wall sunshine as well. I now want a Lamborghini Gallardo.

Wow, what a fantastic gift. I can just imagine the fun that you had with that. How fast did you go in the end?

When you get to our stage in life it is so difficult for people to buy gifts for us, we either have what we want (within reason) or else get it for ourselves when the fancy takes us, then it gets to a stage where we don't think it worth buying a new coat, we won't get the wear out of it!

I love a gift of a massage or similar, another gift I love is a subscription to a magazine.

Which magazine is that , dear? The mind boggles!
Well done TW's family for giving him a well thought out gift indeed.

You have an evil mind. I got my daughter to buy me a subscription to Parchment Craft, my monthly parching magazine. The latest copy arrived the other day, it is Christmas every month.

Sue could have answered "Yes, it was 'Which?' magazine. How did you know?" ('Which? magazine' is a UK consumer magazine)

I don't know what speed I got up to as I was always concentrating on the track. The instrument panel was fairly recessed and I had my sun glasses on. It didn't start pulling the skin on my face back though, so I'd estimate about the 90 - 100 mark.

Oh yes ..very cool looking. Strolled up to the car and got in as if I drove that sort of vehicle everyday. I don't think I looked so cool getting out of it though. To get in, the seat has to be put right back. Once in, it has to be brought forward into a comfortable driving position.

I think the idea is that the reverse procedure should be done for getting out. It's not like an ordinary car where you set the driving position once and then forget it. Anyway, I didn't put the seat back and so had the greatest of trouble peeling myself out of the car. Difficult to look cool under those circumstances.

Did you take a picture of the car, TW?

I am very, very jealous, you know. I should print out this thread and leave it where my children will see it.

What a great gift. I know I'd enjoy something like that immensely.

I can't post a photo in Photo-a-Day because there weren't any taken by me. However, we bought this one that was taken by the official photographer and I think that makes it mine. It is me driving but it was so dark inside the car that all you can see is my hands. The photo has been reduced in size for posting but in the original 12" x 8" print, it is possible to see it's me.

With the exception of the orange cones in the background, that could almost be an advertisement photo!
