It is all kicking off today and ought to be over by this evening or early tomorrow. Cameron will become PM.

I know this is nothing to do with us but the arrogance of the man when he announced that he would stay as PM then resign as party leader (so PM) sometime before September.

My money is on another election before the end of the year. With Peter Mandy as leader of the opposition.

Do you really see Mandy giving up his title?

I can imagine he would have the audacity to rule from the Lords.

I can see him going for it - but only when it is an uncontested leadership election.

And when he is out of the job he would expect to get back into the Lords.

A yo-yo enoblement.

Going, going, gone - with one of the most nauseating goodbye speeches for many a year.

There was only one thing wrong with his speech. He should have made it three years ago.

Not that anyone ever makes political comment, or displays their political allegiance, on these pages, let alone insults politicians. Oh heavens - that would never do!

My money's on Mr Brown's replacement being a shiny, pretty young thing (I think that rules Lord M out), to stand against the shiny, pretty young things currently leading the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties; and on appearance taking precedence over policies, at least at this stage. Lack of coherent policy didn't seem to hamper Mr Cameron or Mr Clegg.

Jonno: six months?

When you mentioned 'shiny, bright young things', were you including 'gormless' Ed Milibland in your thinking? I suppose that, given the desperately shallow depths of Labour's talent pool (oops....sorry..."dazzling field of candidates"), he comes closer than most to that description, but I'm afraid he reminds me of one of the slack-mouthed, boggle-eyed characters from Viz. Is it Johnny Fartpants? All his blather so far has been about the importance of returning chubby Labour backsides to the green benches. Very little about the country itself. He doesn't do fake sincerity very well yet. And he tends to slobber.

When the news reporters were on about which Miliband people preferred just before the result I thought it was like asking someone what type of poop they'd rather tread in. Unless you're a fan of Labour, and a pretty loyal one at the moment they're all different varieties of it to me at least...

Wasn't thinking of Mr Miliband particularly, and he's young and bright, but not IMHO too shiny. Here he is making a speech to Conference.
http://edmiliband.org/

He didn't start the speech off too well; not much apparent presence, but improved as time went on, and I did like the joke he made at Jack Straw's expense at about 4 minutes - but then how could you not enjoy a joke at Jack Straw's expense?

We must hope that he will increase in stature as he grows into the job, just as he improved as he got into his stride in this speech. I think he will.

I may be having second thoughts. He says near the end of his speech that he looks forward to seeing the next mayor of London - Ken Livingstone - and was rewarded with rapturous applause. Perhaps he had his fingers crossed behind his back?

Ooh I hope so!

But my sprog, who lives in London, said that Ken's popularity is rising. Ed, quick, get that stake sharpened!

If it's sharp enough, he can probably get Ken and "gorgeous" George Galloway on the same point. Less cleaning up to do afterwards smile .
