ha, throw a little bit of feed in the pond, and I get a few nibbles! If this was a head-to-head comp in the NBA or NHL (for example), there would be no need to consider this tie-breaker scenario. But, as we're using soccer games, there are 3 choices, not two. Using this week's results, let's say FussBudget had drawn 5-5 with his opponent, and both of them got the Wolves v Manch Utd game wrong .. why shouldn't FussBudget, who picked a draw solo, win his game 6-5? ManU was a shoe in, everyone except one picked it, but they lost. (aka FB picked ManU to not win, against the bottom team, and they didn't win) Anyway, this "tie-breaker" wouldn't be used for every game where both players got it wrong, only for games where *everyone* got it wrong; every single one of us (and the *wrong* pick was a solo pick i.e. "not one of two" etc). off topic: I've been in a tipping comp which had a very unusual rule for pts (there were 18 runners): if everyone got the result right, everyone got a point; but if only one person got the result right he scored 18 pts .. if 10 people got it right they got 9 pts each, with a slading scale in between: correct

18 .. 1 The average ended up being around 9 pts per correct pick (10 players right) instead of 1 pt per game. If you picked the favourites each week you could not win the comp! (fwiw, I ended near the bottom of the standings)

You make the point that there are 3 possible results in this comp, both on the field and in the forum, awarding bonus points is rewarding someone for picking one of the wrong ones. I also agree with LDV and Howie about bonus points. Why should someone get a bonus point for picking an upset. They already got one more point than everyone else for tipping it, why make it 2? And who decides that it's an upset? Maybe they tipped it because they knew something that no-one else considered, star player injured, new manager, change of shampoo in the showers. I'd say, with this comp at least, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I have never understood why ours is called "football" when they rarely use their foot on it! That would be because in the original rules, the forward pass was illegal and therefore everything had to be run on the ground - not to mention a field goal was worth 5 points so it was much more a part of the game than it is now.

I picked it (in truth) because Wolves had been going well against the bigger teams and I thought it was time for Man U to have a bit of an upset. NOTE to anyone who doesn't know I am a Leeds United supporter: I *always* think it is time for Man Utd to be upset!

Four of the top 5 lost, and only one of the bottom 4 lost!
FussBudget collected his first wooden spoon for the season, but still managed to extend his undefeated run to seven games .. his game vs. srini701 was dour struggle that ended in a 1-1 draw.
srini701 slipped to 10th place, a new low-water mark for the season; ending a run of 6 straight weeks in 9th spot. This was the only game that ended in a draw, aka as 7 of the 8 FT-PL match-ups had a winner.
paper_aero lost 4-5 to cellar-dweller szabs to bring to an end a run of 5 straight wins. Nonetheless, despite this loss, he retained his 2 pt margin out front as LeoDaVinci also lost .. he lost 3-4 to Copago, who was the tail-ender bringing up the rear. Let's summarise that again: 1st lost to 3rd last, and 2nd lost to last. Well done ladies!
DanielPoulson is now the only player without a wooden spoon, and he's now replaced Copago at the rear of the field. You work that one out.

Last week paper-aero became the first player to reach 100 goals .. this week DanielPoulson and gtho4 have the dubious honour of being the first to concede 100 goals. We now have a fortnight's rest as the 6th Round of the FA Cup (quarter-finals) is being played this weekend. There were no draws in the FT-PL this weekend. LeoDaVinci beat paper_aero and reduced the gap down to a solitary point. Sypher lost but retains 3rd place .. the gap between 2nd and 3rd is now out to 9 pts which, with just 7 rounds left, means gold and silver will be won by the two leaders. - DanielPoulson wins to bring to an end his run of 7 straight losses.

Three games were picked by no-one, and one game was a solo pick .. so the best possible was 6/10. LeoDaVinci picked 5/10, the two wooden spooners picked 2/10, and the rest of us were 3 or 4 .. yet the eight FT-PL games saw just two draws! LeoDaVinci won again to make it three straight but can't catch paper_aero, who won again; to make it 8 straight weeks out front. Sypher in 3rd place lost again to make it back-to-back losses, and ozzz2002 steps into 3rd place. The two leaders have now put an outrageous 11 points between themselves and 3rd place .. that adds up to 4 wins (three wins and a draw aren't enough to catch them). With just 6 games left until we greet the judges, the two leaders have gone round the last bend last and are straightening up for run down to home and the finish post .. the rest of us are still in the back straight! The loss by Sypher and the wins by those following him leaves us with 5 players separated by just 3 pts (it was 5 pts last week, and the week before that). The bronze medal will surely be won by one of these five players in 3rd to 7th place. - DanielPoulson won last week to bring to an end a run of 7 straight losses.
- he beat PaulE this week and is now just 2 pts behind 2nd last.
- PaulE has now gone 8 straight without a win.
- the loss by srini701 makes it 4 straight (6 defeats in the last 7 games).
- the loss by szabs brings to an end her undefeated run of 6 games.

It was another full-house with 16 of 16 lodging picks. Even though almost all of us picked 6/10 or 7/10 (apart from the weekly winners x2, the wooden spooner and ozzz2002), the eight FT-PL games once again saw just two draws. LeoDaVinci won again to make it four straight. He takes over the front-running duties from paper_aero, who was beaten 8-6 by DanielPoulson. The loss brings to an end his run of 8 consecutive weeks as leader. That win by DanielPoulson over the front-runner made it three straight wins. Before that he'd lost seven straight matches, and was firmly entrenched in last place 7 pts adrift of Copago. He's now caught Copago to make it a dead-heat for last place! The five players running 3rd to 7th also swapped positions, so the gap between the front runners and 3rd place is still 11 pts. ditto the 6 players running 8th to 13th; they also swapped positions .. in other words, szabs in 10th place was the *only* player from 1st down to 13th who retained their position from last week! The losses by ozzz2002, Sypher and KrivoyRog (3rd, 4th and 5th last week) and the wins by those following leaves us with just 2 pts separating the five players running 3rd to 7th (it was 3 pts last week and 5 pts the week before). - dg_dave beat PaulE to make it 4 wins in 6 games,
- before that he'd lost 4 straight games!

Once again the eight FT-PL games saw just two draws. LeoDaVinci won again to make it five straight .. paper_aero recovered from his loss last week and remains 2 pts in arrears. There are four rounds left for the two leaders to sort out the gold and silver medals. LeoDaVinci needs to lose one of those 4 games, and paper_aero needs to win all four of them to take the gold medal. Howie72 and dg_dave both won again to make it three straight wins; they're 11 pts and 12 pts behind 2nd place .. ozzz2002 is the only other player with a realistic chance of catching these two and taking bronze from under them. The rest of us are too far behind; aka the finsh post is too close. At the rear of the field we now have a triple-dead heat for the comp's wooden spoon .. three weeks agao DanielPoulson was 7 pts behind 2nd last. Except for Sypher, not one of the 12 players from 4th to 2nd last retained their spot from last week. - Sypher lost again to make it four straight (five losses in the last six).
- PaulE has also lost four straight (now ten games without a win).
- illiniman14 climbs to 9th, a position not seen since week one.
- gtho4 climbs to 8th, which beats his previous high in week one.
- srini701 falls to 2nd last, a new low for the season (now nine games
without a win).

paper-aero returns to the lead with yet another win .. he has now won 10 of the last 13 games. LeoDaVinci lost on default fuel .. he can thank the the woooden spooners, who couldn't equal or beat the score of illiniman14. The default loss brings to an end a run of five straight wins. He still has the better GD, but now needs paper_aero to lose or draw one of the three remaining games, else he will be unable to use his superior GD. Howie72 retains 3rd place .. he won again to make it 4 straight and move to 45 pts. Anyone on 35 pts or less is now out of the running for the bronze medal (Sypher and illiniman14 will be out of the running next week) .. dg_dave retains 4th spot, but everyone from 5th through to 12th last week moved up or down a spot, or two. At the rear of the field the triple dead-heat is no more as srini701 & DanielPoulson both won to leave Copago all on her lonesome .. four weeks ago DanielPoulson was 7 pts behind 2nd last. He's now won 4 of the last 5 games .. and before that he'd lost 7 straight! - Sypher lost again to make it five straight (six losses in the last seven).
- PaulE has also lost five straight (now eleven games without a win).
- illiniman14 climbs to 8th, a new high for the season.

A truckload of players scored 2 or 3 goals, but only 2 of the 8 games ended in a draw. KrivoyRog banged in 4 goals and lost .. and someone scored 2 goals and won! KrivoyRog lost to the leader, who's now won 12 of the last 14 games! Next best is LeoDaVinci with 9 wins in 14 games .. and he just happens to be running 2nd a mere point in arrears. paper-aero and LeoDaVinci both won to continue their epic battle out front .. we'll know the winner's name when the fat lady has finshed. They're now a ridiculous 13 pts in front of 3rd place. There were no changes in the top 4 places ;ast week to this week, but the 9 players in 5th to 13th place all swapped positions, except for szabs. - Howie72 was beaten by LeoDaVinci, which ended his run of 4 straight

A truckload of players scored 3 goals but, as was the case last week, only 2 of the 8 games ended in a draw. LeoDaVinci scored 3 but was held to a draw, and paper_aero scored 3 and won, to extend his lead out front to 3 pts .. which means we won't have a winner until the final round. paper_aero has now won 13 of the last 15 games! Next best is LeoDaVinci and Howie72 with 9 wins in 15 games .. and they're running 2nd and 3rd. ozzz2002 v dg_dave (5th v 4th) finished 2-4 to knock ozzz2002 out of the running. Howie72 and dg_dave are the last ones standing in the battle for bronze. paper_aero lost the last game, LeoDaVinci won his, and the season ends where we were at the half-way mark .. a dead-heat out front! LeoDaVinci won gold on a countback +27 to +16 and paper_aero collects the silver medal .. paper_aero finished with 13 wins over the last 16 games, but it wasn't enough. Howie72 won the bronze medal .. he won 6 of the last 7 games. The rest of us, all 13 of us, were spread out behind the three on the podium .. have a look at the dead-heat for 13th place! It was a tie between PaulE and Bxbarracuda. They finished with the same number of pts, same goal difference, same number of goals scored, and same number conceded. paper_aero set a new all-time record for the most number of wins during a season. He won 20 of the 30 games for a 66.66% strike rate. He thumped the previous record of 21 wins in 34 (61.76%) set 6 years ago. LeoDaVinci just missed breaking the record as well, finishing with a 60.00% strike rate. LeoDaVinci lost 4 games all season - the 2nd best ever (see complete list of records at foot of this post). Two Horse Race : LeoDaVinci & paper_aero scored the most pts in the first half, the most pts in the send half; they were tied at the half-way mark, and they were tied at the end.
Sky Rocket Award : FussBudget scored twice as many points in the 2nd half of the season as he did in the first half.
Mr Consistency : KrivoyRog and DanielPoulson scored the same no. of pts in each half of the season.
Evil Knievel Swan Dive Award : PaulE had 26 pts at the half way mark, but only scored 9 pts in the 2nd half.
My Turn Out Front : five different players had a go at leading.
We Were Once Last : a total of 8 different players had a go at bringing up the rear .. that's half the field!

paper_aero won the FAPL comp earlier today, and lost this comp on a countback. He failed by a whisker to become the 3rd person to win the FAPL/FT-PL double, which was first achieved by Sypher five years ago. The second double was won by gtho4 two years ago. No one has ever won a treble .. either FAPL-FTPL-FA Cup or FAPL-FTPL-UEFA. Sypher went close in 2006 when he finished runner-up in the FA Cup comp. The defending title-holder was gtho4 .. and last year's silver medallist was paper_aero! That's it for another season. Congratulations to the three medallists & commiserations to the rest of us. |
