2010 Season

Tipping Comp

With August here, the NFL season is fast approaching.

Rules:

One point for a correct tip.
Deadline is always Friday midnight FT time. One point will be deducted for late tips, after a period of grace of three hours past the deadline. (see below for Thursday issue - late in season)
Late starters come in at the lowest score, or lowest active tipper if the lowest tipper has not tipped for four consecutive weeks.
Default score will be the away teams.
Tips not in by kickoff Sunday receive default score.

Bonus points:

One point will be awarded for a solo pick (or one of two if 12+ tippers/one of three if there are 20+).
One point if a player scores 12+/13, 12+/14, 13+/15, or 13+/16.
Ineligible for bonus if player picks all homes or all bar one.
Ineligible for bonus if player tips all the favored teams for the week or all bar one.

For games that start on Thursday: these tips must be in by kickoff, but you do not have to tip all games at that time. I will try to note which games are Thursday games with an *.

It really doesn't sound feasible due to the dynamics of a college season. If you did two or three conferences, then the other conferences would seem like they aren't worthy of being in a comp. I agree that for a College Football competition the pool of games would need to be narrowed down and would have to be fluid from week to week, at least to some degree. Possibly base the teams off of the opening top 25, no matter where they rank during the year. With 25 teams involved, sometimes playing each other and sometimes with bye weeks, have the rules set for only picking 10 or 15 games a week, from those available. Bonus points for underdogs or picking the winner in a current top 25 vs top 25 match up. Another idea would be to rotate the conferences. I would say use the BCS conferences. That would have the 6 largest conferences, ACC, Big East, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-10 and SEC. Allowing for using either 2 or 3 per week.

We can then tack on the College Bowls as the final two rounds (16+16 by leaving out two or three bowls), and we end up with 17 rounds of 16 games. There's no need to include every game (the NBA NHL and MLB comps only include the weekend games), so that shouldn't be a problem. The tipping comp organiser can pick the top 16 games each weekend -- no Thursday games -- Saturday and Sunday only, so that the deadline remains the same from week to week. This could become an annual season-long tipping comp, to replace the annual College Bowls tournament comp. Most of our North American cousins use dart boards picking soccer games England and Europe; rugby league and aussie rules downunder, etc. This comp may "even up the score" so to speak ... brits and aussies will have the opportunity to use our dart boards and ouija boards. BxB, if you put your hand and volunteer to do it .. mate, it's all yours! Be aware that running a tipping comp is a long slog.

What we could do is use the first 16 games that show on the Yahoo page that you have above. I have run NFL comps, with an average of 40 or so players a week, at office I worked in the past, so I am aware of the time it can take to do something like this properly. I think we can come up with 16 games a week. The schedules are already set and the games for each week can be prepared well beforehand. College Bowl pool I think is great as is and the weekly one can be seperate from it. I would like to focus on the better teams, that people have more of a chance of knowing who's playing, as well as games that don't have point spreads that are too high. I think just using Saturday games will work well. DG would you mind if I contacted you during the weekend, fine tune any ideas I have?
