Wonder if anyone has any ideas.
My laptop gets stuck when it comes to starting it up. It gets stuck on the 'welcome' page and will not go any further.
It will start okay in safe mode and safe mode with networking and I did a system restore but still does the same thing.

What other things can I try in safe mode?
I don't have anything on it that I can't afford to lose - it's all backed up.

I asked my network engineer and he suggested this:

***********
"We can try booting the system with this option “ Last known good configuration”
Think we need to press F8 while booting.

We will get this option in the same window we choose “safe mode”.

*********

See if it might help?

Fraid not
Thanks for the suggestion, Srini, but I'm afraid it didn't work but it did get further than before. It got to my desktop but the mouse wouldn't work (could move it but not click on anything) and then the screen went like an opaque white.
I'm using it quite happily on safe mode .. does that matter if I use it like this for a while before I can get to town?

It's probably OK to do that if you really need to run the computer but none of the security programs will be running in the background as they usually do. This won't mean you can't scan for viruses manually though. In fact, it would be as well to do a full virus scan while in Safe Mode to see if it comes up with anything.

You could also try a 'System Restore' using a point in time before the trouble began. The 'Last known good configuration' step might have covered that but I'd try System Restore anyway. You may lose some of the changes made since the chosen restore point.

Also run a check on the disk to see if it fixes the problem. To access that, right-click on the C: drive icon in 'My Computer' and look at the disk tools.

Edit: typo
