The ten 3rd Qualifying Round matches were completed earlier this week, on Wednesday night. The 10 winners joined these 22 teams, who were exempt until (aka enter the competition at) the Group Phase:- three teams (champions, runners-up and 3rd place) from these 3 countries: England, Italy and Spain. 9 teams
- champions and runners-up from each of these 3 countries: France, Germany and Russia. 6 teams
- the champions of these 7 countries: Greece, The Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Scotland, Turkey and Ukraine. 7 teams
- the defending title holders, Internazionale. The defending titleholders are always guaranteed a spot in the group phase (in any event, they qualified as last season's champions of Italy) e.g. if the defending champions had failed to qualify through their domestic competition, they would become the 23rd team exempt through to the group phase, and only 9 spots would be available through the qualifying rounds.
The first round of the Group Phase commences in the middle of next month, on Tuesday 14th September (the 1st round of this tipping comp), and the final will played at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 28th May 2011 (the 19th Round of the comp) .. there's a two month mid-winter break between the last round of the group phase on Wednesday 8th December, and the start of the KO Round on Tuesday 15th February 2011.
The draw for the group phase took place earlier today .. if you've got a few hours to kill, you can read the complete details of the qualifying & exemption procedures here : Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2010-11. Most of the 32 teams in this year's comp are familiar names, but there are a few qualifiers whose names will be alien to most of us (see next post). |
They're the same as last year, and the year before .. the rules for this comp are simple: points
default
upsets
perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts).
if you pick a game solo (or one of two), you score a bonus point.
8/8 scores a bonus point. You also receive a knighthood from Her Majesty.
no one picks a win, whoever picks a draw.
no one picks a draw, whoever picks the upset win.
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes;
if they're identical, bonus pts will be used. |
Deadline: is always kick-off in the first game of the round. Please don't wait until the death, as there are 4 time zones in Europe, and there's a good chance you'll get it wrong! If you post your tips 4 hours before the scheduled kick-off time for games in the UK, you should be safe. No one has successfully defended their title .. and doomed is the only player who's won this more than once. He's been on the podium three times. Sypher has stepped up onto the podium 4 times, all silver. ElfTwinkle, gtho4 and ozzz2002 can win it a second time, ditto KrivoyRog (who'd become the first to retain their title) .. or will this season see a new name etched on the trophy? A special mention for LeoDaVinci .. if he wins bronze again, it'll be three back-to-back bronze medals, and he'll become the first player on the podium for three consective years. Secondly, the last time he collected a wooden spoon in this comp was way back in week 14 of the 2007-08 season .. his streak stands at 41 consecutive spoon-less rounds!

On behalf of your fellow contestants, welcome aboard! After a few seasons you'll get the hang of this comp and how your opponents pick .. some of us know soccer so well that picking winners and draws just comes naturally, others check the stats for 2 seasons, both domestic and European comps, and those of us who haven't got a clue have perfected our skills using the dartboard hanging up on the garage wall.
The defending titleholder, KrivoyRog, continues from where he left off at the end of last year. He's top of the table after one round! Alongside him, in unfamiliar territory, is ozzz2002 .. after round one of last year's comp he was bringing up the rear all on his lonesome; stone cold motherless.
All of us picked the win at home by Barcelona, no-one picked the draw at Old Trafford, the Inter Milan draw was picked solo by KrivoyRog (what's new), and the win by FC Copenhagen was picked by ozzz2002 and toocool4u .. these three players all received a bonus point for solo picks.
Werder Bremen were 0-2 down after 18 minutes, but came back to salvage a draw. Spurs blew away their lead, and with it went Sypher's solo pick.
Almost all of us picked a draw for the Copenhagen game [ 13 of 17 ] and we were all looking aok when the scoreboard showed 0-0 with 3 minutes to go. Copenhagen scored from a set-piece to give ozzz2002 and toocool4u a bonus point each. The two who picked the upset away win by Rubin Kazan were KrivoyRog (who else) and George95.
Over the 19 rounds of last year's comp 63 bonus points were collected by the 13 players .. but 15 of those 63 went to KrivoyRog. That's almost ¼ of all the bonus points to one person! There was daylight between him and the rest of us mere mortals .. next best was the 6 bonus pts by srini701 (the remaining 11 players had 2 to 5 bonus points each).
LeoDaVinci has again avoided the wooden spoon. He had no spoons last season, and no spoons the season before .. his last spoon was way back in the 4th last week of the 2007-08 comp! His streak now stands at 42 consecutive spoon-less weeks. |

. Between us we averaged 67.9% .. which is almost 5½ /8. This is the second-best effort in the 8 season that this comp has been running .. coincidentally, our best-ever effort was 5¾ /8 at the same stage in last year's comp .. week two!
PaulE and the man with no spoons were this round's weekly winners with 7/8. They picked the lot except for the loss at home by Marseiile to Spartak Moscow (an own goal 8 monutes from full time). This upset was picked by triviapaul, who collects the only bonus point for this round.
After just two rounds, KrivoyRog has completed all 3 columns: a weekly win, a wooden spoon, and a bonus point .. 10 of the 17 runners have none!
We now have a three-way tie for 1st place .. and the next 5 players are a point in arrears. In other words, half the field is separated by just one point. The next round is in a fortnight, at the end of the month: UEFA ( 3 ) Tue 28th Sep. |
