. Last week we averaged 67.9% between us .. almost 5½ /8. It was the second-best effort in the 8 seasons that this comp has been running. This week we we improved again and broke through the 70% barrier. We averaged 71.8% which is almost 5¾ /8. We were inches short of the all-time best of 72.1%.
One of us picked a perfect 8/8 and collected a bonus point for his efforts .. our Kiwi cousin aka The Gooner picked the lot and flew up the table from 11th to 2nd!
PaulE is now our leader .. ozzz2002 and KrivoyRog have been dethroned and drop back to 5th place, two pts in arrears.
LeoDaVinci has again avoided the wooden spoon, extending his spoonless streak to 44 rounds. His last spoon was in week 14 of the 2007-08 comp .. another 11 weeks and his streak will extend to 3 years in elapsed time (the all-time record for any comp is 3 years and 1 week spoonless).
After three weeks no one has been able to run away with this .. will it continue? |

. Six weekly winners, two wooden spooners .. and we end up with a battle royale. It's a four-way tie for 1st place.
The Gooner is one of those six, and one of those four. In the last two rounds he's scored two weekly wins (one perfect) and climbed from 11th to 2nd to 1st!
George95 earns ad hoc award for consistency .. in week one he was 16th, week two 16th, week three 16th, and now in week four he's running 16th, again.
The first 10 are separated by a mere 3 pts (same as last week), and one solitary point separates the next 5 players (same as last week). Looks like no one will be running away with this comp this year .. the fat lady wil be singing for many more weeks. |

. Another high-scoring round. This week we average 71.6% between us, which is almost 5¾ /8. Once again we were inches short of the all-time best of 72.1% .. this season's comp is just 5 rounds old, and three of those rounds are in the all-time top 5 of best averages!
Four players picked 7/8 .. they all missed the AS Roma loss at home to FC Basel (which was picked by no-one). However, szabs picked a draw in Rome and collected a bonus point .. she was inches short of a perfect round!
Three other players also picked a draw .. George95, illiniman14 and ozzz2002. The bonus point was enough for George95 to move away from 16th place .. he was 16th in week one, 16th in week two, 16th in week three, and still 16th in week four.

. Somehow or other KrivoyRog managed to pick 5/8 for the weekly win. The rest of us scored 3/8 or 2/8!
Last week we has zero bonus pts; this week we had 8 of them. Five of the eight games were picked solo, or by two players, and a sixth was picked by just four players .. the remaining 2 games were picked by everyone bar one, and everyone bar two.
Five of us managed 3/8 .. and paper_aero was one of them. He actually extended his lead with that score as the next 3 players collected a wooden spoon each .. in fact 9 of the 16 players who lodged tips collected wooden spoons! I've got no idea if that is a record, as no one has ever tracked it over the years, but it must be close .. the standings table has red twos all over it!
The net of 9 woodens has caught LeoDaVinci. His remarkable run of 47 spoonless rounds has come to an end .. his last wooden spoon in this comp was way back in week 14 of the 2007-08 season! The time span between spoons was 2 years and 35 weeks, the second longest on record (see table below).
As most of the spoons were at the top end of the table, and most of the bonus pts were in the bottom half of the table, the 13 players in 2nd to 14th place are now separated by a mere 6 pts .. down from 9 pts in the previous round. |

gtho4 has opened up a 2 pt lead out front .. maybe he should go away on holidays more often, ignore the bookies and the form, and lodge his picks in advance.
Two weeks ago the 10 players running 3rd to 12th were separated by 7 pts .. last week it was down to 5 pts. It's now back out to 7 pts as Sypher collected the wooden spoon to fall to 12th spot, his lowest position for the season. If we exclude Sypher, 3rd to 11th are separated by a mere 4 pts.
That brings us to the end of the group stage, and Round 12 of the tipping comp. So far we've has 96 picks .. another 84 picks and this comp will finish.

What does that list look like? It looks like a cricket scorecard on a Saturday afternoon for the #2 batsman, who was out for 20 runs in the 3rd over .. but it isn't. Those digits are the number of correct picks this week by all of us, all 15 of us.
Between us we lodged 120 picks and hit pay dirt with just 20 of them, for a strike-rate of 16.6% .. this is the 2nd lowest ever since the UEFA Champions League tipping comp started back in 2003-04 (this year's tipping comp is the 8th edition). Our all-time low is the 13.4% average back in week 13 of the 2005-06 comp.
Of the 8 games played two games were picked by no-one and 3 games were solo picks! Sypher won this round with picks of 3/8 and illiniman14 collected the wooden spoon with picks of 0/8 .. which is a complete reversal of the weekly awards for the previous round -- they swapped places -- illiniman14 won it and Sypher collected the spoon!
Picks of 3/8 is not the lowest scoring weekly win in this comp .. I've gone through all 8 tipping comps played to date and created a Record Book for the UEFA Champions League. The all-time low for a weekly win is 2/8 which was achieved, coincidentally, in week 13 of the 2005-06 comp .. looks like we all have problems with the first legs x8 of the KO Round in this comp!
btw a strike rate of just 25% for a weekly win is probably the lowest for any comp (in any sport) held over the 10 years we've been running tipping comps in this place.
The four players who did not have a bonus point scored one this week, which completes that column of the standings. Who else but Sypher would pick AC Milan to lose at home to Spurs .. if you ring his place this is what you'll hear when he answers the phone: COYS
As if that wasn't enough, Sypher picks Arsenal to beat Barcelona! (and this is form a Spurs supporter). KrivoyRog from the North-East joined him in Milan - he also picked Spurs to win. Next is triviapaul - he had the hide to pick AS Roma to lose at home to Shakhtar Donetsk .. and gtho4 was the only tipster to pick the draw in Marseilles.
no change out front with the 3 leaders.
srini701 retains 3rd spot without any weekly wins.
he's also the only person without a spoon.
toocool4u is also looking for his first weekly win.
ozzz2002 has fallen to 11th, his lowest position for the season. 3rd to 7th are still separated by just 2 pts;
but 3rd to 13th are now separated by 6 pts, down from 8 pts last week.
The next round is mid-March : UEFA ( 14 ) Tue 18th March, and the quarter-finals start in the first week of April.

Gtho4, I think giving Seven players a point for pikcing a draw is a bit much as that is nearly half the field. That result should have led to no-one getting a point.

. Of the 8 games played two games were home picks for all of us .. we all hit pay dirt with Real Madrid, but no one picked the draw at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea would progress if they kept FC Copenhagen scoreless .. and that's what happened; except they also failed to score.
Inter Milan, the defending European Champions, needed a miracle to progress to the quarter-finals, as they'd lost the first leg *at home* .. they needed an away win; a feat which has been achieved only once in the history of the UEFA Champions League. Back in 1995-96 Ajax Amsterdam lost at home in the first leg of their semi-final against Panathinaikos, buy won away to progress through to the final:

With complete disregard of history, four players had the hide to pick Inter to win away, and become the 2nd team to achieve that feat.- there were three weekly winners this week.
