This year's edition of the FA Cup tipping comp runs for 7 months over 10 rounds from the 1st weekend in November until the middle of May 2011 (FA Cup Round 1 through to the Final). The Football Association has received entries from 759 teams for this season's FA Cup, comprising 667 non-league teams plus the 92 league teams. The league teams are the 44 teams in the FAPL and FLC, and the 48 teams in League One and League Two.- the qualifying rounds for the 667 non-league teams will be completed later this month.
- the 32 survivors from those qualifiers join the 48 teams in L1 and L2 in the First Round (equals 80 teams).
- the 20 survivors from the Second Round will join the FAPL and FLC teams in the Third Round (equals 64 teams).
- from there it's a straight knock-out through to the FA Cup Final.
There are two changes from last year's tipping comp: (a) any and all replays will be excluded, and (b) each tipping round will be of equal weight with 16 picks. To tip all 10 rounds you will only need to lodge picks 8 times, as follows:- the First Round of 40 games will be split into two rounds of 16 games each by ignoring 8 games.
- the Second Round has 20 games .. we will ignore 4 games.
- the Third Round of 32 games will be split into two rounds of 16 games each.
- that's a total of 5 tipping rounds so far which, with the remaining 5 rounds of the FA Cup, gives us the 10 tipping rounds!
- we will also have advance picks, same as last year.

The dates for each round of the 2011 FA Cup are as follows: 1st Round : Saturday 6 November 2010
2nd Round : Saturday 27 November 2010
3rd Round : Saturday 8 January 2011
4th Round : Saturday 29 January 2011
5th Round : Saturday 19 February 2011
6th Round : Saturday 12 March 2011
7th Round : Saturday 16 April 2011 [2nd semi on Sunday 17th]

default
upsets
perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick .. home win, draw, away win
in other words, it's always at 90 minutes.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts);
but if the wooden spoon score is higher, default is the wooden spoon;
default for the semi-finals, the final and advance picks is the wooden spoon score.
you score a bonus point if you pick a game solo .. or one of two players.
one bonus point for 11+/16;
14/16 or higher receives a further bonus point (plus a knighthood from Her Majesty).
no one picks win, whoever picks a draw;
no one picks draw, whoever picks the upset win;
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes;
if they're identical, bonus pts will be used. |
This year's comp is the 9th edition of the FA Cup tipping comp. Last season's comp was won by srini701, who became the first tipster to retain his title and the 2nd to win this comp twice. The first ever FA Cup tournament (officially the Football Association Challenge Cup) was held back in 1872. It is the oldest knock-out football tournament in the world .. 16 years later the oldest football league in the world was formed (everyone plays everyone else home and away), when The Football League was formed in 1888. The record number of entrants for the FA Cup was 656 set back way back in 1922 comp; it remained unbroken for 83 years, when 660 teams entered the 2005 comp. The record has been broken each year since .. the 759 teams in this year's comp is a new record.
Although league and non-league teams are exempt until certain rounds (the FAPL and FLC teams until the 3rd round, L1 and L2 teams until the 1st round), the draw for each round of the entire comp is unseeded.
Anyone can play anyone, form doesn't mean much on the day, and picking the winners is not easy .. of the 16 games in Round 1a we all failed to pick the result in 3 of the games! Only one of those three games saw any bonus pts awarded: ConzaBhoy and N-Bomb picked Barnet to win! Barnet are running stone cold motherless last in League Two, and Charlton Athletic (a former FAPL team) are near the top of League One, chasing promotion to the FLC.
Brentford v Aldershot Town (League One v League Two). All of us were safe picking the League One team to win at home, but that's not what happened. They were held to a draw; a result picked by triviapaul (he also collected a bonus point for a solo pick) ... ozzz2002 went for the doctor. He picked an away win!
Howie72 is our first weekly winner, and our first leader. Results for Round 1b will be posted soon.

| The Howie72 show continues. It's another weekly win and he skips away to a 3 pt lead and, ominously, he's already 5 pts in front of third. For those of you unfamilar with his tipping form, be aware he has a withering finish. He usually leaves his best to last .. he flies along the rails in the home straight, and hits the finish post at full bore to win in a photo!
His 5 pts margin back to 3rd is the same as the 5 pts that separate the *fifteen* players running 3rd to 17th place.
Our strike rate jumped from 33.3% to 46.5% .. there were no games this time picked by no one. One game was picked by everyone, for our first 100% game.
The Second Round will be played in 3 weeks time, on the last Saturday in November. The tipping thread will open in the middle of next week when the truckload of replays have been decided. There are 20 games in the Second Round (we tip 16 of them) but 55 teams had their names in the barrel!

| Round 2 finished with 8 weekly winners and one wooden spoon. Howie72 continues to lead, with the same margin back to second; triviapaul continues to retain second spot.
The fixtures for the 3rd Round are now complete except for one game -- the Lincoln City v Hereford United replay has been postponed-rescheduled-postponed, then rescheduled and postponed yet again, because of a frozen pitch.
The replay is now scheduled for Saturday 8th January 2011, and the 3rd Round match Wycombe Wanderers v Lincoln/Hereford will be played on Tuesday 11th January. The tipping thread is here: FA Cup - 3rd Round - Sat 8 Jan.

| The first half of Round 3 saw three weekly winners with 10/16, and one wooden spoon at 5/16.
Howie72 is no longer on his lonesome out front .. he's joined by triviapaul. The two leaders have opened up a 4 point gap back to 3rd place, where there's another dead-heat. From there each rung of the ladder has just one occupant until we reach the tail-enders. Last week 3rd to 12th were separated by 6 pts .. this margin is now out slightly to 8 pts.
BxBarracuda and ozzz2002 picked Crawley Town to beat Derby County, who play in the FLC .. this game, played on Monday night, completed the first half of Round Three. Crawley Town are a non-league team playing in the Football Conference (which feeds into League Two).
KrivoyRog, triviapaul and gtho4 picked an FLC team to hold an FAPL giant to a draw and succeeded, with their solo picks.
No one picked Burton Albion (who play in League Two) to beat their superior opponents, the FLC team Midlesbrough. All of us except one picked Middlesbrough to win .. BxBarracuda picked a draw; and collected a bonus point for a near-miss pick!
The other half of Round Three will be completed tonight, when Wycombe Wanderers play Hereford United.

Howie72 collects yet another weekly win, and skips away yet again. He's been our leader from the moment the flag dropped .. triviapaul momentarily had a share of the lead last week, but falls back to his customary 2nd place. No one else has occupied 1st or 2nd place all season .. 6 different players have had a go in 3rd place.
Sypher is the other weekly winner; his first for the season. N-Bomb collects the wooden spoon, his first for the season.
Four games were solo picks .. and ozzz2002 picked three of them! He had the hide to pick Sunderland, who are in the top half of the FAPL (the top tier of English football), to lose at home to Notts County, who are in the bottom half of League One (the third tier of English football). Back in 1921 the Football League expanded to three divisions .. over the next 110 years, how many times did a top flight team lose at home in the FA Cup? Ten times, that's how many .. and ozzz2002 had the hide to pick the 11th one! (see table below for a complete listing of these losses x11 at home)
For good measure, he also picked Stevenage Borough (who are down in League Two) to win at home, against Newcastle United (who are in the FAPL)!
