If you have an old keyboard around somewhere or a friend's extra one, try swapping that component out first. It's the easiest step to take, just unplug and plug in again with the replacement. After that it is a software (or OS) problem.
Edit: Dumb me. There is a step you should take possibly even before that one. I had my MS Fonts manual sitting in front of me and wondered if there was a proximity of ASCII code that might have slipped a digit and wham, it hit me. Try changing your font setting in a word processing program and see if that impacts the situation. If not, then go to the keyboard switch.
Be sure everything is off before doing any plug/unplugging.
