Super RugbyThis year's comp has been extended from 14 teams to 15 teams with the entry of a 5th team from Australia, the Melbourne Rebels. This balances out the comp as each member nation of SANZAR will now have 5 teams in the comp. The tipping comp will now run for 4 months over 18 rounds (previously 3 months over 14 rounds) from Friday 18th February through to Friday 17th June (it starts in the same week as the UEFA Champions League recommences, after the mid-winter break on Tuesday 15th February). The rules are simple: points default draws upsets perfect picks draw bonus dead-heats deadline | one point for each correct pick. if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours; but if the wooden spoon score is more, it's the spoon score. for those brave souls amongst us, you can pick a draw (good luck). if you pick a game solo, you score a bonus point (or one of two tipsters). of 7/7 scores a bonus point; ditto for 6/6 when there's a bye. no-one picks a draw, bonus point for the minority who picked the upset win (same as FLC comp). weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes; if they're identical, bonus pts will be used. is always Thursday midnight FT time, with a period of grace through to kick-off in the first game which is, sometimes, just 35 minutes later. If you lodge your picks late you score zero for any game that's started. |
This is the 10th edition of the Super XV tipping comp (for those of us who are wondering, the sport is rugby union). Last season's comp was won by Eraserhead (followed by paper_aero and srini701), and the 2009 comp by gtho4 (followed by Eraserhead and ElfTwinkle), and the previous one by ElfTwinkle (followed by paper_aero and ozzz2002). The two comps before that (2007 and 2006 seasons) were both won by our Kiwi cousin, Howie72 who, btw, holds the record for the longest spoonless streak (elapsed time) for any FT tipping comp at 3 years and 1 week .. he avoided the wooden spoon from week 9 of the 2007 season, plus all of the 2008 and 2009 seasons, through to week 9 of 2010 season (he collected a spoon in week 10). All trivia tipping comp junkies, and anyone else who follows the game they play in heaven, please sign in!

Thanks to gtho4 for providing that write up....I will only be doing the scoring this year with the assured thought that the grandmaster will be there to guide/help me whenever and wherever required... And I STRONGLY disagree to that "game they play in heaven" statement ...shouldn't that be CRICKET or maybe tennis?

I agree with you about the 'game they play in heaven' tag. I think Rugby Union is a silly game, but I am going to tip a few winners, anyway.

And I STRONGLY disagree to that "game they play in heaven" statement mad ...shouldn't that be CRICKET or maybe tennis? Now, because heaven is all on clouds, I doubt they have room to put in grass, let alone have a field... so, I think the game played in heaven has to be a card game, or maybe darts. Now, I have no idea what the rules of RU are, but, I'm willing to branch out of my comfort zone and give it a whirl. I suppose you need someone to get all the spoons. Are there draws here, or is it straight win or lose?

Nor does anyone else, including the referees. Are there draws here, or is it straight win or lose?
Draws are very uncommon- perhaps one or two in an entire season. I would never even attempt to predict one.

I enjoy the idea of a competition. I'm having fun with the Super Bowl one.
I know absolutely NOTHING about rugby other than it is played with an oblong ball and that they kick it sometimes and try to dribble it? (I think)...LOL. I'll have to study the rules a little.
With that being said I'm in for the fun of it. I'll be splitting the spoons with Leo...

Welcome to this comp and I have some news for you...I didn't even know it was rugby when I first joined this comp and I still don't know how rugby (or ice-hockey for that matter) is played... It's always great to see more people join the comps here...so have a blast

......Anddddddd we are ALL off to a terrific start..... none of us got the first match right and ALL of us got the second one Results will be up only on Mondays coz I am in India and will only see the websites then, unlike when the GM was hosting and you could expect to see the standings up by Sunday

A Hearty welcome to the Super XV rugby 2011 season! 13 players have decided to try their luck this year (ooppss...."bad" number to start with?). 8 coming back for another dose (Eraserhead, paper_aero, srini701, gtho4, Howie72, Sypher, Ozzz2002 and Le0DaVinci) 4 no shows from last year (MrFox, Dg_Dave, Davjack and Elftwinkle) and 5 new comers (illiniman14, BxBarracuda, N-Bomb, rxbigdawg and George95)
As your new host, I only have worry about the 7 returning faces, as they know how good the previous host was and how bad a job (writing, especially) I am going to do over the next few months .... hopefully I won't have any of the new faces looking up last year's write-ups
Eraserhead has sprinted off the blocks and keeping up with him after 1 round are newcomer illiniman and that evergreen veteran Ozzz2002
Another newcomer George95 takes home the first spoon of the season.
No bonus points won in round 1 (hopefully there won't be too many this season to complicate my life here )
I won't make an [censored] of myself by trying to summarise any of the matches, so if people want to know about what happened over the weekend, expect one of the resident "experts" to do that after every round
until next week then.....

We Welcome Davjack and MrFox in round 2 of the comp ...there are now 15 people competing for honors this year....YEEEAAAAAAH .
Eraserhead continues to build on his early lead and wins his second successive HoF, but keeping pace with him for a second round in a row is illiniman14 ....let's see how long this race keeps up!
BxBarracuda, George95 and N-Bomb also landed HoF spots this round, making it a bit of a crowd there.
MrFox who joins us this round gets off to shaky start...he was the only one to miss Cheetahs-Bulls match and so lands his first spoon
New team Melbourne Rebels "surprised" the Brumbies at home for their first win of the season (something tells me they will win a lot more). The Free State Cheetahs were the only team to lose at home this round as 4 teams (Waratahs, Sharks, Highlanders and Bulls) set the pace with 2/2.
Until next week then.....everybody go watch the Cricket World Cup

LeoDaVinci picks up his first HoF award for the season with 6/7 picks.
N-Bomb becomes the first person to win a bonus point this season with his pick for the Queensland Reds to win against the Brumbies.....that also shoots him into a one point lead over the still inseparable Eraserhead and illiniman14.
rxbigdawg chose a right week to go default as 4 away teams won this week. on the other hand, MrFox picked up his second spoon in as many weeks...
Don't know about the rugby but the cricket sure's getting interesting....go watch the world cup until next week (but remember to drop by and lodge your tips for the next round here )
