Wooden spoon for me? Oh, thanks. Still, at least I chose England for yesterday's game - oh, hang on a minute........

I'm guessing nobody else picked them, Rossian (I certainly didn't), but GO IRELAND!!!!! (the home of half of my ancestors)

But when I did pick Ireland to beat Bangladesh, they let me down. England just aren't firing at the moment. Collingwood's place in the team seems unassailable and I don't see why.

The World Cup is up and truly running now We had some fantastic and fascinating matches over the last week or so, mostly predictable, but some very interesting matches. England has contributed its all to make this World Cup "viewer-friendly". All its 5 matches to date have been good advertisements for the 50 over game and they sure are leaving their fans fuming and biting their nails all the way
Nobody expected them to lose to Ireland (of ALL the teams)....they did, prompting one writer on the cricinfo website to write "The only comparison that makes sense to me is with another team that played in green 42 years ago. The New York Jets were huge underdogs going into Super Bowl III against Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts, but Joe Namath played the game of his life to upset the odds. The Jets were part of the much-derided American Football League, the new kids on the block. Against the might of the National Football League, they weren't given a chance. Their win paved the way for parity, for a level playing field."
Whether Ireland's win does that for cricket or not remains to be seen what with the ICC planning to cut the teams in next World Cup to just 10
Over here, illiniman14 has surged to sole lead by picking up another bonus point (the New Zealand win over Pakistan). 5 others won a bonus point for that match. There are also more HoF award winners this round than there are participants in some of my other comps
N-Bomb dared to pick Bangladesh's win over England! Wonder how much he would have won had he bet some money on that result in the real world! He was the sole pick for that match out of 19, and so wins an extra bonus for that pick.
At the other end of the table, srini701, Howie72 and trev1 all had a lousy round with just 7 right picks out of 13, and have all slipped to the bottom of the table
But plenty of action still to come....so go out there and hit a six or two

England may be making it viewer friendly, Srini, but they are wrecking my predictions by winning the one I expected them to lose and losing the others. I shall have no nails left by the end of next week.

Their first defeat since 1999, in 34 matches. And which was the last team to beat them? Pakistan, which shocked the defending champions again to top Group A and send all pre-tournament predictions into a tizzy
Australia now play hosts India in the quarterfinals, meaning most of us have lost at least 1 advance tip for the semifinals (see advance tips table above). Some of us had both England and Sri Lanka in the semis and they both play off in another quarterfinal. Unpredictable Pakistan play equally unpredictable West Indies while the smooth riding South Africans take on New Zealand in the last quarterfinals.
Over here, Eraserheadand KrivoyRog join illiniman14 in the lead! They both were the only 2 to predict a South African win over India. Krivoy also picked an underdog bonus for picking Pakistan to topple the Aussies (along with 4 others)!
Rossian continues to rise up. She is this week's other HoF winner with 13/14 picks and is now within knocking distance of the podium.
Sypher and MrFox take home their first spoons for the comp with 8/14 picks.
There will be no more underdog bonus points from the KO rounds and your advance points start adding up. The quarterfinals start Wednesday, March 23, so try and lodge your tips for round 4 before then!
Edited to correct Eraserhead's scores. Thanks to illiniman for catching that!

The ICC couldn't have asked for more than that as the home advantage has been rammed home in an emphatic manner by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
After Pakistan thrashed Australia in the league match, it was India's turn to put on a clinical display in the quarterfinal and the match truly marked the end of an era. Ponting fought bravely, but if he really wants to prolong his playing career, he should really consider stepping down from captaincy South africa proved for the umpteenth time that they cannot win a match when it matters They are yet to win a Knock out match in 5 World Cups!
Over here illiniman14 has opened up a 3 point lead at the top over George95. Another 4 players are a further point behind. Our medallists should come from among these 7 with KrivoyRog capable of upsetting a few calculations anytime!
9 people landed HoF spots this round by picking 3 of the 4 quarters (each match worth 2 points from this round). Sypher and LeoDaVinci picked up spoons by failing to get even one match right, though to be fair, Leo lodged tips only for 2 matches.
The bonus points for advance picks for semifinalists have been added to the TBP (Total Bonus Points) Column without disturbing your existing bonus points, so you know how many points you scored.
Most of us have lost at least 1 finalist (some have lost both ) so the final round scoring is going to be real interesting....I still feel anyone from the top 7 or 8 can win this thing now....Good luck for the final round tips now!

This is a detailed article linked from the leading sports networks websites front page in America. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=110329/CricketThough not getting as much coverage as the major professional or major college sports, since the World Cup began there has been a noticeable push to showcase Cricket more then I have ever noticed them doing in the past. This also goes for their football/soccer coverage over the last year on their networks, showing more games. They haven't gone as far as to show live cricket yet, though the highlights have made the shows. I haven't read the article yet, but the specific show on ESPN that the article comes from is a quality one called "Outside The Lines". I am curious if those who know the sport would consider this article an accurate and good opening representation of cricket.

It's TEAM INDIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Indians put up a clinical and professional display led from the front by their captain MS Dhoni and recaptured the World Cup after 28 longggggggggg years Along the way they defeated every single previous World Cup winners (West Indies, Australia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka!)
I won't go into a detailed description of the matches now and bore you all, so let me just leave it at that
We had 5 Australians, 6 from the UK, 2 from New Zealand and 1 Indian taking part in the tipping comp here this year and who wins it at the end? ......... A Canadian! Take a bow, George95! It was a thoroughly deserved win for him in the end, as he picked the lot....both the semifinals, advance tips for both finalists and the right winner of the World Cup!
He finished a point clear of N-Bomb who was consistent through out the 5 rounds...it was a sole pick bonus from one of the earlier rounds that finally clinched it for our winner here!
Finishing in 3rd spot and on the podium ahead of all tipping comp veterans is a debutant, sward351....Congrats to him too and here's hoping to see him in many more comps here.....
I can go on writing about all the people who took part in this comp, but will not trouble you much I should however mention illiniman14, who led right through the comp and only lost out because he backed the wrong team
KrivoyRog also deserves a special mention for some outrageous picks and I probably would have awarded him 5 points had that tie he was tipping in the finals, came off
Thanks a lot to all of you for taking part and staying the course with me. It was fun organising a comp with so many participating and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did....Looking forward to seeing most of you around for other comps as well.....
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 3 PODIUM FINISHERS:
1. George95 2. N-Bomb 3. sward351

I guess I do know something about cricket...
Thanks srini for running things around here. Congrats to N-Bomb and sward351 for their performances. It's a win for all the rookies here!
Man, I wouldn't have minded to see a tie, just to see what KrivoyRog would say.

Congratulations to George and many thanks for running the competition, Srini. After the wooden spoon in the first week I'm more than happy with my finishing spot.
And well done India on the victory.

Oooh congratulations to our illustrious winners . And what a great final, Gauti and MS (finally playing a captain's knock - after so long) had a great game. But that's not to forget the brilliant effort of India's bowlers - with Zaheer's 3 maidens in an ODI final
