Hi somali.....Your point is valid, but your entry is still a Political pressure group, not a Political Party....I was just trying to clarify that major difference with Sypher. As far as I'm concerned, it opens things up a lot more...there are tons of student, activist, etc. movements to choose from now, if that's how Sypher classifies a Political Party.

Oh my - is this the "mother of all grey topics" or what?! LOL

BagLady - I know I'm going to regret asking this, but what is your definition of a political party?

I know this doesn't count as a challenge, but Mama's new entry consists entirely of foreign words which are supposed not to count for points! Should she have a third go???LOL

Maybe I should just give up! I thought the question was whether or not we knew the foreign words for "Party" etc. I didn't realize I couldn't post anything in a foreign language. Help???

I agree with Mama....I think what Sypher meant was to be on the lookout for the foreign words meaning Party or the Country Name?

I'm tired...guess I'll go back to work now, and get some rest! lol

For the last time....FOREIGN Words do count as long as they are not the country or 'PARTY'. Since I am not a linguist, any help in spoting them will be appreciated. This doesn't get you extra points, but it makes my life a little easier...lol

A political party in my opinion is a group who has a member of it party standing in an election for a seat in whatever body of power they call a parliament/senate...etc etc

A big Congratulations to Mama & Somali for last week´s win! WTG!!!

I also wanted to welcome Eyeball....I see you finally found your way over here. Don´t worry, you´ll do fine...and if you get confused ($100 says you will..LOL!)...we´ll be glad to help you out.

Now, a question for Sypher. I know we can´t use the actual country name in the entry along with the political party. But what about the country as an adjective---for example: The Mexican Drinking Coalition (Mexico)??? LOL Is that acceptable?

I am challenging Pinhead's entry on grounds that women in Afghanistan are not allowed to vote, let alone stand as candidates and therefore RAWA is not a political party by these conditions set down by Sypher:

"A political party in my opinion is a group who has a member of it party standing in an election for a seat in whatever body of power they call a parliament/senate...etc etc"

Oh, One more thing, Zozo....I wasn't setting the rule...that was just my opinion on what I thought a political party is.

Most of the entries for yesterday were political groups/parties. A couple did not have anyone up for election. So, I ask all of you...What do you think ?

As for Pinhead's entry...I've checked it out and I will class it as valid....Reason...This is from the offical website for RAWA..

quote:
RAWA, the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan, was established in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 1977 as an independent political organization of Afghan women fighting for human rights and for social justice in Afghanistan.

Fortunata...You lost 2 points as there is no 'Of' at the end of your entry.

Okey-dokey, boss. The website I found had the "of" at the end but I thought it was pretty redundant (the "of Namibia" part) as the initials for the party are only SWAPO. Should the "of Namibia" part really count, then the party´s initials would be SWAPOON! LMAO

OK, my humble opinion on the subject of a political party - (I could offer the credentials that I hold a bachelors degree in politics from Princeton University, but seeing as how I haven't used that particularly in the 21 years since earning it, it is about as helpful now as it was in getting employment fresh out of college - LOL!!!! Liberal arts education - Hah!!)
Anyway, I think a political party is a group organized for the expressed purpose of encouraging political change. While it may or may not advance a particular candidate for any office, it does advance a specific agenda, and it does so by means other than the means used by lobbyists. Historically, I think a lot of political parties started out long before they reached the point of advancing a candidacy of some sort, but a lobby would never be thought of as proposing a candidate. Another aspect would be the breadth of the change proposed - if we're talking save the whales, it's more of a lobby or a political action committee, but if we're talking entering international negotiations to suppress the use of chemicals and mechanisms which contribute to global warming and the destruction of the rainforests and the ozone layer and the polar icecaps, then we're getting close to a party.
And if that doesn't help, then I'm throwing a party of my own - drinks on me!!!!

I have no idea if this is a valid reason for a challenge, but I'm feeling belligerent and BagLady is too clever by half!! LOL

I challenge BL's entry on the grounds that CUNUA is a political pressure group of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, and therefore is not a political party in Afghanistan.

OK...my ruling on Baglady's entry. I checked several sites, including theone sent in by Baglady (Which was pretty lousy..lol). This group is classed as a political party on several Afgan sites. Who am I to disagree with them. The entry stands and Baglady receives an additional 10 points.
