Just heard on TV - no one seems to have an article yet, though MSNBC has a banner (without a clickable article).

Aww That's a shock. She was wonderful. I grew up with her really. From National Velvet to the Burton Years. Lots of memories here . A sad loss.

She and I shared the same birthday (not the year).
A wonderful actress and humanitarian... especially her work with AIDS organizations. How sad frown

One of the last of the classic Hollywood icons, with a great humanitarian heart, she will be sadly missed, may she rest in peace.

The lunatic fringe has already weighed in on Miss Taylor's demise. This from Megan Phelps' of the Westborough Baptist Church twitter.

What the hell is wrong with those people? They seem to find some stupid reason to picket almost anyone's funeral. I think what they do is very, very wrong!

The less attention we pay to those fools, the better for everyone. IF they didn't get any press, what do you want to bet they wouldn't do this sort of thing?

This is a shock - I think I expected her to live forever.

I was so touched by her passing as for me, she's always represented my mother's generation. Mom used to have a hairdo that resembled Liz's upsweep and we'd kid her about it.

I really became 'acquainted' with her life in an odd way though. I was traveling across Australia in a coach that made stops across the country. We'd stopped in Kalgoorlie to see what a mining town was like and had an interesting day and a half. We had to stay up late to meet the coach going through so, as there wasn't much to do in the evening in a mining town if you don't drink, we went to the library which was one of the best stocked ones I've ever seen! I read her autobiography there for hours. I found her resilience amazing and she hadn't even begun her AIDS campaign. Her health was awfully rocky and yet she always sprang back up. Someone today said, I think it was Barbara Walters, that she didn't take herself all that seriously. I can tell you from reading that book, she was natural about things.

I'm glad she is out of pain now.

I loved her in "Cat On a Hot Tin Roof" and "A Place in the Sun." Rest in peace, Elizabeth Taylor.

Liz had a real sense of humor...

"Elizabeth Taylor was laid to rest this afternoon at a small private funeral service attended by family and close friends in The Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn-Glendale. The service was scheduled to begin at 2 PM but at Miss Taylor's request started late. Miss Taylor had left instructions that it was to begin at least 15 minutes later than publicly scheduled, with the announcement, 'She even wanted to be late for her own funeral,'" a statement from the late actress' rep to Access Hollywood read."

Rest in peace, Elizabeth.

I always liked Ms. Taylor as my mother, like Bruyere's, had a similar hair style, and I have numerous photos of my mom where she could pass as Liz's twin (without the violet eyes, of couse). I've always liked horror movies and I remember when I was a little girl, I heard an ad for a new movie about a Virginia wolf and who was afraid of it, LOL. I really wanted to see it and was disappointed to find that it wasn't what I thought. But a great movie anyway. She was such an icon and will be missed by many. RIP

Clara Sue, do you remember skipping around singing 'who's afraid of Virginia Wolf?'
I see what you mean though. For me, there was something very natural about her that she never lost though she grew up in show business and had such an interesting life. Though she'd dress up and wear incredibly expensive jewels and clothing, she gave the impression of never losing touch with humanity.

How strange you mention that! Yes, I do! I was telling hubby about that the other day when we heard of her death. Isn't it funny how things are remembered?

It's funny how things like that filtered into our existence as kids. The Bond films come to mind as well as all the stories about stars going on in the background for us.
To a generation who probably played at 'cigarette tag' with slogans from tobacco companies, the name of this film kind of infiltrated our world.

I think her eye makeup and the Cleopatra role influenced my vision of her because occasionally you'd see ladies wearing that much.
